iPhone 5S Stuck in recovery mode : iTunes restore error 50

Hi,

I bought an iPhone off eBay germany. It always gives the same restore error in iTunes :

"The iPhone [iPhone] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred [error 50]."

Anyone got a idea how to get the iPhone to work? I've tried 2 different computers with firewall off, different USB ports, different cables but keep getting this error at around 65% of the restore process.

I've tried restoring in the DFU mode too, still the same error pops up. I read somewhere it might be the Baseband IC which needs to be replaced. Would replacing the Qualcomm MDM9615M help?

Anyone who has had the same issue or knows about it? Kinldy help me out of this.

Haris

Hi. I am from South Korea. I have an IPad Air with a cellular function. I had the same problem of updating error code 50. I knew it might be the faulty baseband because I could not use the cellular function since several month ago. I tried everything suggested but could not succeed. It always stopped in the middle of updating and especially at the point of firmware updating , about 65 percent point. As I thought Baseband IC is the hardware causing the trouble of updating, I tried to heat up the IPad body uniformly with a hair dryer covering it with a blanket to keep its temperature. And it succeeded! Just one shot and it finally passed the 65% where it always stopped! But I could not update (I don't know why) but I had to restore it and it came out as a new IPad! I suppose heating caused the malfunctioning IC to work somehow. I hope my experience to be a help to someone having a similar problem like me.

Well... Believe it or not i was having this problem with my iphone. I tried everything that you can find on internet. And i am a mac expert. I saw that solution a couple of days ago and found it funny. But this morning, this was my last solution. I tried it 2 times (first did not work) i figure out it was not hot enough. So i open the sim card door and try it a second time, blowing hot air inside the iphone too. All the process was done during the restoration mode. Guess what?? at the famous 75% of the update, the place where it stop working usually (firmware update) IT WORKED! NO ERROR MESSAGE -50. Now my iphone is up and running PERFECTLY well!

par

Its hard to believe but worked for me as well. Initially i was getting error -1, then it was 50, then 16** something, then i start getting 3194, and lastly 50 again. I've tried to restore on three different computers. However Hair dryer trick worked like a charm. Guys theres nothing to lose, just give it a try.

par

Thats exactly what i told myself. It was my last hope after many attemps (let's say about 10 different approach to solve the problem) and it worked.. Go figure.

par

Thanks for those suggesting using hair dryer to make sure it hot enough while restoring. I cant believe my iphone 5s with error 50 while updating but now my iphone working as normal. Use hair dryer guys to make sure it heat enough next to sim card tray. Work for me & i hope its work for u too.

par

Omg I spent 5 hours trying different things and tried this hairdryer thing as last resort and IT WORKED!!!! Thank u so much!!!!!

I have just managed to fix a phone with an Error 50 on it. NONE of the help on this forum helped so what i did was this. I held down the Home Button and Power Button for 10 seconds whilst the phone was connected to my Mac. I then let go of the Home button BUT I KEPT HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON during the whole of the sync process and hey presto it worked. Yes i had a sore finger by the end but it has been 2 weeks and my phone has been in 3 shops who couldn't fix it INCLUDING the Glasgow Apple shop. Hopefully this will work for you guys as well.

I have the same %#*@ issue with my wife's iPhon5s. Update keeps failing and I don't wan to restore until I backup all my kids photos and movies from it. Thanks for the tip. will try it tonight.

This does not work I'm sorry to say

par

This work on my 5 s ..... thanks, but why cant Apple not help people????? one day people will tune angenst Apple....

par

Didn't work for me. Now I'm using the logic board teardown to clean any crud that may be causing it. I suspect humidity or water exposure which could have caused corrosion or something to impact the "baseband IC". I suspect I'd need to get a heat gun to remove the protective plate so I can use a toothbrush to clean the connectors with rubbing alcohol. Will post again if it works. What gets me is I spent good money to replace the display and got a 9H screen protector. Grrrrr

par

Didn't work for me, but by knowing about this I tried a different way and held the home button just before the 65% freeze and continued to until the phone went off for the next stage - and all sorted. Thanks Craig

Heating up the phone with a hairdryer while the updating process was happening got me back into the phone - and stopped the error 50 code from happening!!! Can't believe it. I tried all of the other methods mentioned earlier multiple times all day but the phone always froze at the 65% (approx) mark....

Once the restore process completed the carrier appeared and normal texts were coming through to my phone - I was also able to send normal texts. As soon as I tried to call someone the carrier disappeared and the phone will only work on WIFI again. Back to where I started but at least I can use the phone on WIFI.

Hmmmm.....

I was able to restore the phone but too bad no sim is recognized.

And the same issue arrived now when a new IOS update was available. Had to heat up the iPhone to get that installed. Seems like a temporary fix for for a permanent problem.

Sep 2018: Tried the heating method for an iPhone 5 and viola...it worked !!! During the restore process, applied a hair dryer intermittently to the SIM slot. Just ensure that the phone does not heat up too much. Allow to cool before inserting the SIM

Heat up your phone with a hairdryer, I took the SIM card tray out (you'll have to put ya sim back in to activate it, but it'll heat up quicker if ya take it out)

but get the hair dryer pointed at it, ensure your device gets nice and hot. Believe it or now it works, I'd been trying all week to resolve it but kept having the error 50 notices after getting to around 60/65% but try this..

Restart ya phone

Click restore or update (I updated)

Have a hair dryer pointed at it, ensure it gets hot

and believe it or not it'll go through.

I'd like to thank whoever came up with the hair dryer solution, you're a genius..

This forum has been a God send......

Error 50 is baseband modem. Reball modem will solve

Cette réponse est-elle utile ?

Indice 1

5 commentaires:

For those to whom 'reball' means nothing (and appears rather unhelpful) - like me - it means re-doing the solder on all the PCB connections and it is a process similar to sticking it in a jolly hot oven for a period of time. All the soldered connections melt, re-flow and thus, hopefully, fix a bad connection.

par

100% correct martin well put forward. the best answer for any baseband signal issues is to find a local repairer that can reball the modem with leaded solder. the fault is a design flaw not helped by the use of unleaded solder as it cracks. any other fix will be short lived as the melting point of unleaded solder is around 246c so no amount of hair drying will suffice i'm afraid and is totally unreliable. if you have genuine parts on your device then your 1st option should always be Apple.

par

Tony, You appear to know what you are talking about - Why does the hairdryer method work, then? It's obviously not hot enough to do any solder re-flowing. Is it just expansion of... everything... making a better contact somewhere or something? Sure this is only going to last as long as the phone is hot? Just interested. Despite this trick working with my eBay iPhone, I still cant get it to activate - wifi works fine, as does the phone generally. Rather irksome.

par

Hi Martin

The hair dryer method works as a tempory fix by expansion and contraction with hot air and cold. Ie the freezer method. Following a drop the ball connections can crack rather than detach from the board this is because of the location of the board fixing screw. When the phone is dropped the shockwave travels through the case into the board through the mounting screws. The iphone 5s has three chips that have to be matched for activation on the apple server these being. serial number/ region/ colour/ WiFi and Bluetooth addresses are stored on the emmc (nand) this is tied to a serial number on the baseband modem and the eeprom baseband memory. During restore all three need to communicate and match. If a mismatch then activation is not possible.

par

Than is it possible that the wifi and bluetooth connection are working, and the phone doesn't ?

OMG. I can't believe that worked! Apple were going to charge us £260 for a repair? IT WORKED INSTANTLY. If it doesn't work, make sure you try it twice. We wrapped in a sock and blew a haridryer at it. We also blew inside the sim insert, AND IT WORKED. This is incredible.

I have had this problem more than once. Make sure the phone goes into full dfu mode. This means the screen has gone black-stays black while connected to your pc-then gets recognized as a device in recovery by iTunes. 65% is about when the device will 'wake up' during a restore if only in recovery mode.

1. Device off

2. Hold power / home for 8-10secs

3. Release power while home stays pressed for 10-20secs (depends on iTunes recognizing phone)

4. You should have a black screen and iTunes should be asking you to restore it.

It might take 2-3 times for the phone to completely restore. Hope this helps

@Blizotte

I tried to restore many many times, still wont restore. Always get the error 50 at the same point.

par

did your phone work haris? i have the same problem. what did you do?

par

Just as an update, the steps above put the device in DFU mode which in most instances works and lets you restore (not update) the ipsw, but since error 50 is more often than not a hardware issue, it may not work. Best case scenario, the chip is not damaged, but rather some crud (likely due to some soft of liquid damage) could have caused a connection between couple of the connectors. In that case, use the logic board replacement guide to remove it and then follow the how to fix liquid damage guide to clean it and cross your fingers.

NOTE: water damage doesn't always mean contact with water, water vapour would be just as bad. (i.e. listening to music while taking a hot shower or in a sauna.)

I'm going through this now, but mine is because my 2yr old put it in the washer when mommy was looking away.

NOTE: the logic board is covered by a metal casing which you'll need some sort of indirect heat to remove by heating the many tiny solder connectors between the front and back panels. heat gun is best choice.

Ok guys ,I spoke to few phone experts and what i heard from them wasn't a good news.but can be fix.

Error 50 caused by "baseband IC" its a hardware thing.you can not fix this problem unless you replace this IC There are technicians out there doing this repair.but depends on where you live.if you live in Asia it cheaper to replace the IC. otherwise it might be not worth paying high cost for repair. but there were some cases rarely the error fix itself restoring over and over again for few times.GOOD LUCK

Hello Haris, have you tried doing a forced restart to solve this problem? I recommend you try it and if it doesn't work out then try use the RecBoot software to get out of the recovery mode. Please see the instructions here: http://www.technobezz.com/iphone-that-is...

Like said many times before, this is a problem with the baseband ic. I have solved this by reflowing ( heating the chip to the point where the solder balls reset themselves.) If this doesn't work, the BBIC cannot be replaced. It is paired with the processor and Contains the iMei of the phone. A reball of the chip would be required.
