Hi Moe - I have a 15"-2010 MBP 2.66 Ghz Core Intel i7 (upgraded to 8 GB 5 years ago) and recently upgraded to 2TB for music production. It crashed regularly (like every 1 hour). Took it to a repair guy in TO (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and he switched out the famous C9560 capacitor with a similar Apple one. Continued to crash - even worse (every 10 minutes) running anything - especially on the Internet or using my music production software (Logic X). Took it back and he popped in another aluminum version of a 470MicroFarad instead of the 330Microfarads that came with the board. I have no idea what voltage it is but the crashes are far less. I used the computer all day yesterday and it only crashed twice, which makes me believe that you need the right capacitor and right voltage. I know nothing about electronics but recall a situation this year where I kept losing internet connectivity from my Rogers Rocket modem. I finally got a Rogers Tech that knew what she was talking about and she discovered that I had the wrong AC adapter with the wrong voltage connecting the modem to the outlet. So I got a new AC adapter and the problem was solved. Anyhow, I'm going to go back to this repair guy and have him install the capacitor recommended by Louis Rossman Repair Group or Edward on this site. I think they use 2 V.
I also asked a tech friend out of the USA what they thought when I continue to have crashes .... Their response below...
"What kind of capacitor did your repair person use? If it is the same or similar as Apple’s Tantalum capacitor, you will still have crashes. Also - Check the voltage! The Tantalum capacitor regulates power and when you run a lot of high performance applications on your GPU you need more voltage. If the voltage isn't right, you will get crashes and panics. Replace your bad capacitor with a great quality capacitor.
The video I sent of Louis Rossman doing the repair (here is the link again…https://youtu.be/DzcgT_fiVTA) recommends using an Aluminum Polymer Capacitor - and Louis sells the part but from the USA … here is the link to Louis’ part… https://store.rossmanngroup.com/d3-c7771....
In Canada you can buy a premium Panasonic Aluminum Polymer Capacitor at digikey for under $3.
