Laptop is totally dead after a swollen battery.

Hi all.

I've recently obtained a heavily used MacBook Pro from an office environment. The laptop wasn't in too bad a shape but the battery had expanded straight through the bottom of the laptop (see picture). The laptop would not turn on with or without the battery when it was plugged in to a charger, no lights, nothing.

I obviously will be getting a new battery in the future but at the moment I can't even test if it works at all since it won't power on from it's charger. I was wondering if there were any ways to get it to show any signs of life, or perhaps and suggestions as to what could have failed. No water damage or obviously damaged components, and the normal software tricks like resetting the SMC do nothing. The laptop was working fine up until the battery had failed.

Batteries that go this far often have a deeper issue with it's charging logic.

First take the system outside and pull the battery out ASAP! You don't want it to burst as it could ignite as well as create fumes you don't want in your home.

The next thing here is to see if the MagSafe you have working and good health. Review this Apple T/N: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.

Now plugging the MagSafe in what is the color of the MagSafe LED?

Still off. I was wondering whether or not it could be the Magsafe port itself, or some sort of protection protecting it from switching on without a battery. The port itself isn't in too bad a shape, though the pins do look a little misaligned (not enough to cause serious issues I don't think)

Nothing at all.

At this point you'll need to try another MagSafe adapter and your MagSafe port on your computer doesn't look all that good I would replace that as well.

Do make sure you get a REAL MagSafe adapter from Apple directly. The market is being flooded by fakes which can damage your system.

following what dan said what wattage is your adapter ? should be an 85w if its lower and the battery is dead your laptop may not power on as it dosnt have enough power although you should still see a led on the Magsafe
