Introduced in 1997, the PhotoSmart system began as a combination of cameras, scanners for existing photos and negatives, and photo printers. Later, HP rebranded its line with numerous cameras under the PhotoSmart name categorized within different series. The early HP camera models were based on the Digita operating system. The first and original HP digital camera was called the PhotoSmart. As an Intel Miniature card-based model, the PhotoSmart was a basic camera with VGA-resolution and simple LCD. In the early 2000s, HP partnered with Pentax, a Japanese camera maker, to distribute some of its cameras under the PhotoSmart cameras. Many of the cameras were sold with the Pentax branding on the camera lens.
