Introduction

If your Mac laptop is running hotter then you would like, this guide will show you how to install rubber feet that will lift the laptop up to reduce your average operating temperature.

Read me before starting: While this guide will help reduce the temperature your Mac runs at, early systems (2006-2012 MacBook/MacBook Pro) will always run hotter then Retina systems. These systems do not have vents for fresh air. Apple relies on the ports to provide fresh air and the hot air in the system is recycled for additional airflow. This issue is not present on the rMBP. These laptops have real cooling and will see reduced temperature drops.

13" MacBook Pro only: 13" models do not have a dGPU. This means they inherently run cooler, so a reduced temperature drop should be expected. This will still help cool these systems down, but not to the degree it helps cool down dGPU equipped systems (15/17").

The author used a Early 2009 MacBook Pro 17" for this guide. Prior to applying different feet, the system regularly ran at 180° F. After this change, the system seen a 58° temperature drop and was reduced to 122°.

Do not install the replacement feet on top of the factory installed feet. They may break off the system if the conditions are correct and the system is moved.

  • Place your Macbook upside down on a clean flat surface.

  • Clean the surface of your laptop with rubbing alcohol or a similar cleaner.

  • Identify where you would like to place your new rubber feet. The new feet should be placed somewhere near the factory installed feet. Avoid placing the new feet on curved edges.

Peel the paper backing off each foot. Once this is done, install them onto the laptop where you chose to install them. Peel the paper backing off each foot.
