This is the man who fixes the sewing machines that make your clothes.
India is the second largest producer of textiles in the world, after China; it produces 23% of the world’s textiles, by spindles. Seelampur (also spelled Silampur) in northeast Delhi is one of India’s largest textile manufacturing regions.
Kyle visited Seelampur because it’s home to the largest electronics scrap market in India, but during his trip, he also saw a garment factory. This is the repairman-in-residence, who keeps the machines in working order.
The machines are primarily industrial, single-needle lockstitch devices made by companies such as Juki and Arun.
We’re not sure what this machine is, exactly. Do any of you know?
His tools are simple—screwdrivers and wrenches—but the factory couldn’t run without him.
