Netbook zg5 not showing any sign of life after small water spill.

My 3 year old son spilled less than a quarter of a cup of water on my zg5. My wife just wiped off visible water and closed the top.didnt bother telling me.

Not knowing anything about the water spill I just tried to power up as usual but nothing happened.No lights and no sound just stone dead. So I plugged in the power supply and again tried without any luck. Then i noticed a drop of water near the spacebar. The rest is history but important point is that when i asked her the wife said my son was watching cartoons and zg5 was running on battery power when she left the room but the netbook was off when she arrived at the seen of the crime.

Steps I performed:

1) took off all power/battery.

2) opened case and took every thing apart step by step and then removed cmos battery

3)the back of the keyboard was wet on the left corner and a small area under the touck pad had visible signs of dried white water marks around components.

4) used alcho to wipe mother board clean.

5) left mother board out in open sun for an hour

6) left mother board to dry out under fan over night.

7) put everything back next day and tried to power up via battery but no luck

8) tried using power supply but no luck. No lights and no sound just stone dead and still no sign of life.

What do u think is wrong here?

I think my motherboard is fried.

I dont know how to check the mothrboard circuit or components. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Careful with step #5! Open sun exposure can damage your components as much as the water.

Since the computer was turned on before the water, and off after the water I'd say the odds of a short are high. Typically if water spills on a computer and the computer is off, it can be dried in one of iFixIt's drying bags, or a bag of rice. This works because the computer isn't conducting (much) electricity when off, there is still a tiny bit there though so it isn't a guarantee that you can recover it even if the computer is off at the time of the spill.

Any number of your components may be fried, the first I would wager would be the motherboard. Usually the mobo will absorb the short and just replacing that is enough, however any (and all) of your components could be fried! Start by looking for any signs of defect, small burns or swollen capacitors (there may not be any since a short happens pretty quickly). After you replce the mobo, pay attention to any sequences of lights or beeps you get to continue diagnosing which parts could be fried.

Thankyou for your reply Andy. I agree about the sun exposure bit. I think I got paniked. Not entirely sure about the netbook being on at the time of the spill. Maybe the battery ran out just before the spill but I guess its just more of a hope.

I did put the mobo in a bag of rice afterwards and its still sitting there. Before that I took a magnifying glass and found no signs of burns or swollen capacitors. But there were white corrosion marks on the mobo where the touch pad sits. Keeping my fingers crossed for the rice bag bit to work.

Shan, before replacing anything, the very first thing you want to do is to remove all power from the computer, that includes the battery. After that, disassemble your computer right down to the motherboard. Follow this guide. Then clean all the parts with isopropyl alcohol. Use the highest grade, preferably 90% or better. You local pharmacist might help you with that. The "visible signs of dried white water marks around components" might already by corrosion. Once it is absolutely clean, visual inspect it. Look for burned, charred, or missing components. Take you time with it and look careful. It does have a lot of SMD components and requires a sharp eye ;-) Find the component PF1 which is a 5A fuse and PD5 which is a special diode, called a voltage supressor, replacement part is number is P4SMAJ20A SURFACE MOUNT TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SUPPRESSOR POWER - Pan Jit International Inc.. Make sure that those are okay. You may need a multimeter to check on those. Hope this helps, good luck

Great reply oldturkey03!!! Schematics and all. After the initial steps to disassemble and clean the netbook then I did put it back togther to check if it worked. it didnt. I think this was not a very wise move on my part as there may have been some moisture still leftover. Anyways I did disassemble the netbook again righ down to the motherboard. Then I put the mobo in a bag of rice to dry out any residual moisture and it is still there. I am planning to take it out over this weekend and do as you have advised.

Its friday and I couldn't wait any more. Took out the motherboard from the rice bag.

It is all clean and no burned or bloated or charred components visible at all.

Using multimeter I Checked pf1 fuse connectivity is ok.

pd5 diode part seems tricky. I dont know how to check it.

So moved on to connect the motherboard and the start switch board then attached the battery and pushed the on button. NO LUCK. Still dead. checked voltages accross pf1 and pd5

PF1 shows dc 19 accross. PD5 also shows about the same voltage 19 DC. What do I do now oldturkey??? Thank you for helping me along this far...

Shan, sorry, just came across your comments. Okay, so you have power coming in at all the right places, which is good :-) now we have to find out where you do not get any power. I will check the rest of the schematics and will try to post them for you. Bear with me on this...

Do you have power on there all the time, or only if you switch it on? What did you use to clean the board?
