Won't boot up after I removed the optical drive

I removed the optical drive of my imac g4 to put into a different computer. When I tried to boot it up after that nothing happened. I then gave it up for a while and so I put the hard drive into a different computer but am now trying to boot up using another computer in target disk mode. I then put an optical drive that may or may not work into the computer with only the power plugged into it. After that when I tried to turn it on I noticed that the fan and the optical drive would run but nothing would come up on the screen or come through the speakers. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Put the original optical drive back in.

Although that might fix the problem, the optical drive isn't currently available because another computer that I don't own is using it. Also, do you know if removing an optical drive would actually cause it to not work? All the guides and such I've seen haven't said a thing about that. If you have a reason why that might work I'm all ears. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Check your display cable and make sure that it is secure. The issue you describe is a:

a.) A graphic card failure.

b.) A CPU failure.

c.) A loose display or LVDS cable.

You will want to check all three of these issues. Do you hear a startup chime? If you don't then it is probably "a" or "c' and could even be "b." Whenever I turn a computer on and it is not working properly, I go back and check for loose cables and so far, that has fixed 100% of my issues. The way the g4 is laid out it is very easy to loosen a cable even if you never touched it. I would try this first then try a few other troubleshooting procedures. Tell us what you find so another community member or myself can provide you with any other assistance.

Hope this Helps

Something that I didn't mention was that I don't hear a startup chime when it starts up and that I had previously checked for loose wires when I had opened it up. How would you suggest I test the other options to see whether they're the problems? Thanks for the input.

I found this helpful! After removing my noisy broke cd/disk drive & putting it back together my imac would not turn on. well atleast thats what it looked like because I couldnt see the screen.

I did barely notice and image at an extreme angle while attempting take my imac back apart and thankfully it was just the monitor cable I forgot to plug back in good. Thanks~
