Boots to the Apple then turns itself off

I've just purchased this one second hand as I love the powerbooks.

Trouble is before I start with the seller and try to get my money back.

I was wondering if this is a massive system problem, logic board problem or a simple problem.

It boots to the Apple then turns itself off or will go to the Restart screen, then back to the apple and shut down. It is on the power lead and not trusting the battery to have or hold a charge.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You guys have helped me fix in three Powerbooks, One really old Titanium that fell from a hieght and two others for my family. Thanks!

Thanks guys,

But after checking and reading your replies and doing the dance, I got an answer back regarding returning it, which is a shame because it was a really clean machine externally, hardly any scratches to bee seen.

Was sorely tempted to keep it and do the work, but then the thought of replacing the logic board and associated cost got the better of me.

So afraid to say ti been repacked and remailed.

Thanks for all the help though..we live and learn

If you have the original OS disks You could try booting from those and running apple hardware test by holding down "D" as the computer tries to start up. That will only work if you can get the disk in though. If you can run the Apple hardware Test, run the extended test. That should tell you if there is a logic board problem. If you can't even do that... then I am sorry to tell you that it is most likely a logic board problem.

try booting from an external drive. If it does the same thing, then the logic board is probably at fault.

Try booting while holding +S, then type fsck -fy to check if your hard drive is OK

No effect!

I take it it's the F8 button as the Powerbook doesn't have an FF button.

It still goes between the apple screen to shut down or restart screen back to the apple and shutdown?

Thanks

Just tried the original Powerbook install disks and they didn't get to load, before it shut off.

Then tried the Tiger 10.3 which is what it is supposed to have and it souded like it loaded the disc then froze after pushing the apple logo to one side and displaying a couple of small lines to the left of that.

About an inch long to the top left of the apple logo.

Does it sound software or logic?

Thanks

This is probably not the answer, but does the light on the AC adapter plug stay steadily on and not flicker? I've seen some that are so touchy that the computer will power off at the slightest touch. This can either be due to a flaky AC adapter, or a flaky DC-in. A lot of PowerBook power issues can be fixed by the replacement of the DC-in board, but on a PowerBook it's a fairly extensive procedure, and it might not be the answer, so if you have the recourse of returning the item to the eBay seller, that might be the best option.
