Slow start up after spill

I am trying to fix a friend's 2007 Macbook. Her kids spilled something on it a while back, and now the startup is extremely slow, and it will not startup at all if it is not plugged in to the power adapter. When I attempt to boot it up, it starts to the grey apple screen, which then turns blue. At that point it hangs anywhere from 5-15 minutes, before it goes to the login screen. I've replaced the hard drive, and tried a clean install of the OS and restoring from a time machine backup and from the old drive, all give the same result. Once it starts up, it works fine, and all the keys and trackpad are fully responsive. I've run the Apple hardware test, and seen no errors.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of a keyboard fault that the OS is working around in that hang time that points to a bad keyboard assembly. I haven't tried booting into verbose mode yet, because I'm not really sure what I should be looking for error wise.

Once it's up and running make a new user account and set that to be the login. I'm thinking either some startup/background process, or a damaged/corrupt file is causing this. The new user account test will confirm or invalidate this assumption.

I added a new account, and its taking just as long to load to the login screen. Should I try changing the login options to "Automatic Login" to this new account and bypass the login menu?

One thing I forgot is that the OS has been upgraded to Snow Leopard from a retail disk, not sure if this would make a difference, but since it isn't what it shipped with, I wanted to point it out. When I replaced the HD, I installed Snow Leopard and nothing else, and it did lagged just like with the old drive. Booting from DVD also takes a long time, even longer than from the HD

Could be the OS boot from the original install disk and see how fast that is... you might have a backward compatible problem with the HHD. Many HHD are now running SATA III with the claim they can be used on older (slower) SATA types, (yours is probably 1.5 GB/s not current 6 GB/s), but, users report slowdowns, hangs and freezing from some vendors/models.

I think that's it. I pulled the HD out and tried the install disk, and its faster. Still not as fast as mine, which is a 2006 Macbook, which is odd, but its running better. Both drives from the 2007 are 3.0GB/s SATA, and from what I read, the original drive shipped with them were 1.5GB/s.
