Replaced my LCD, but the new screen is blank too!

I am not a computer expert so bare with me... My old screen on my iBook G4 12" (1.2GHz/256 30G Combo APX model no. A1054) went blank although you could still vaguely see a shadow of the browser etc... Thinking the screen had gone I got a new one and after replacing it the same thing is happening so it can't be the screen someone has sugested it is the motherboard whatever that is but please tell me this is not terminal as I cannot afford to replace it!! Is it possible to plug it into an external monitor at all so that I can use it as a desktop until I can find sufficient funds to buy a new one... and if so what type of connection adapter would I need as my mothers pc monitor has a bulky connection which doesn't fit any of my ports... Thank you in advance!!! Ruth

Hi there yes I the screen is black but the image is still there everything else is working fine... but both screens are not working in that they have the same black screen and the image is there but very dark. Yes unfortunately I dropped the iBook about a week before the screen went black. No othere problems at all from what I remeber... I ahve been given a monitor so will try that next although I will be away for next couple of weeks so won't be able to do much more until I get back... Thanks Ruth

Do you mean the iBook was connected to an external monitor and you get a dark desktop image on the external too ? If so, check the brightness on the external cause should have a perfect imageon the external. Please post the result here.

no unfortunately I haven't been able to hook it up to a monitor yet as the person who gave me their monitor didn't give me any cables!!! No what I meant was the two screens for the laptop are doing the same thing. I am going away now for a couple of weeks or so but may have email contact at my friends for a week before no contact. Where I am going there is an apple store so I may try to take it along to see if they can diagnose the problem and let you know what they suggest hopefully they can hook it up to a montior and let me know if that works... watch this space!!! Thanks appreciate some expert advice as I am certainly not an expert!!! Ruth

Hi just found the thread I was looking for and hoping you can still help... The laptop hooks up perfectly to external monitor and I have had two bits of advice now... one that it could be the back-light gone and two that it is the inverter cable..Is there anyway of finding out what the number for the inverter cable is without taking it apart as there is one going on ebay which would be a cheaper option than getting fixed at the apple store or anywhere else... the inverter cable is coming from the G4 12" laptop too but do they differ at all..also surely if it is the back-light it wouldn't have gone on both screens... any help would be gratefully received!!Ruth

Here's the cable you need:

It's a difficult job to replace the inverter cable on the iBook G4.

First step is to connect the iBook to an external monitor using a VGA adapter:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8639G...

then we will know if the graphical electronics (logic board) is working or not.

When you say <<My old screen ... went blank although you could still vaguely see a shadow of the browser etc.>> does it mean the screen is black but you still can see a faint image of the desktop ? If so then you have a lightning issue. Was the iBook dropped before the failure happened or did you have intermittent video interruption when opening or closing the lid ?

Does it need to be the airport and the inverter cable... Can possibly get the inverter cable on ebay not sure about the airport cable... Apple store said they could repair for £100 is that a fair amount to pay or should I risk getting the cable and getting a friend to do with the step by step instructions..Thanks Ruth

The airport and inverter cable are individual cables but they're taped together where they go in the iBook hinge that why they sell the two cables as one replacement part.

I would not pay $200 CDN to replace an inverter cable but hey, that's me. It would be cheaper for you to buy a complete compatible working display and just do the display replacement. Check ebay for one ($50). It will be easier for your friend to swap the display than open the faulty one and replace the cable. You can even resell your old LCD panel to pay for the replacement display.

I changed the display if by that you mean the screen but that didn't work same still happened...dark screen with browser in the background... not very good at these things as you can tell!!!

OK so the inverter circuitry fuse on the logic board might be blown but you still can use the iBook with an external monitor. That's what I would do cause replacing the logic board would be too expensive if you can't do it yourself.
