Susan Syme, you are probably talking about the Enhanced Traction System (ETS) warning light. It will turn on when the engine computer sees a problem. The ETS system monitors wheel speed via the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). If the ETS system sees a wheel spinning due to snow, ice, rain etc., the ETS computer sends a request to the vehicle's engine computer to reduce torque. If your light is coming on when you are driving in slippery conditions, this is normal. If it staying on all the time, the ETS is either turned off or you have another problem. I would suggest to have it scanned and see if it throws any codes. Most of the larger automotive accessory places like Autozone offer a free scan. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi abcdshirley,
It seems as though there may be a couple of things wrong with the car.
This is from the owner's manual for a 1997 Chev cavalier. It describes why the ETS light may be on, (either because the ETS has been turned off or that there is a fault with the system.
This is also from the manual and describes what to do in the event of a check engine light condition. I have read that AutoZone USA will scan the ODBII port for free to see what codes are present to assist in finding out what the problem is.

I got all excited about getting a free manual. But it says the site can't be loaded 😕
@dellajones90661 Unfortunately, that's the nature of the Internet; you can't necessarily count on any given link being good forever. Given that one is seven years old, it's not unusual for it to be gone by now.
However, you know the old "when one door closes..." saying; even though that one doesn't work, here's one that does, at least as of this date.
ets light stays on all the time.

had mine checked .resulted in leak in the evap system
put a new fuel cap on cleared the code problem solved
I got a code for bad fuel injector #4…. will have DH change out all 4 then see how that does.
