No you can't add in a second Hard Disk Drive (HDD), but you can add in a Solid State Disk (SSD) and with your current HDD that came with the system you can create a Fusion drive configuration. Thats the good news!

Now the bad news: It's extremely difficult to open these new super thin iMac systems. So if you haven't opened a few iPads (similar construction) and a few older iMac's this maybe too big a project for you, sorry ;-{

In addition, the SSD is a custom model that currently Apple is the only supplier.

The best answer here is to bring your system into an Apple Store and have them add it in.

I just want to chime in here; I took my iMac apart yesterday to install some new updates; added a new Core i7 3.1GHz CPU and upgraded to 16GB RAM. While I had the machine open I also bought the OWC 240GB SSD meant for the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro in the hopes this would fit. Sadly, while the SSD stick fits perfectly in the slot provided on the motherboard, the computer won't start with the stick installed.

I've contacted OWC about the drive but for now it appeares as only Apple branded SSDs will do the trick...

Yep, Apple altered things again! They are now using a pre-standard M2 PCIe interface Vs their proprietary one which uses the same connector. If I read the tea leafs correctly here I think Apples use of a smaller SSD unit prodded the standards group to adapt the smaller interface into a standard, but from my personal experience at these types of meetings it is a glacial process and remember others ideas will also be incorporated so what Apple started with likely will be different at the end and Apple also wants to move more quickly so they didn't wait for things to finish jelling.
