Macbook (Not Charging) MagSafe Board + Battery Connector replaced

My macbook displays the (Not Charging) when plugged in.

The battery is fine, it holds a charge and can be charged inside other Macbooks. The powercord is fine, it charges other Macbooks and keeps my own running. And the mac can run off the battery as well. It just will not charge up.

I've replaced both the Magsafe DC-In board

and the battery connector with no new results.

Is this now a Logic Board issue or do I have other options? Can a Logic Board be fixed?

Just wondering if original poster found a solution to his problem?

Mine current situation is exactly as his was a few years ago.

Battery can charge in another macbook but not in mine. Power cord works in mine and other computers, but light doesn't go on in my computer as it does in others. Power cord won't charge battery in my computer but will in others. Battery icon is reading correctly. Other power cables do not charge the battery in my computer.

A leaking roof got my computer a little bit wet, besides slight water behind screen that is drying up on its own, the only other concern is this battery issue.

Any suggestions on a simple solution to fix it? Right now I'm thinking to try and buy an external battery charger. What else can I do?

Thanks, Joan

PS resetting the SMC did not work. I have no idea how to restart the computer from an external.

I have the same issue - 17" A1297 Macbook Pro - Will not charge the battery (magsafe doesnt go orange) but the internal battery will charge within another laptop and i have a second magsafe charger that does the same...and tried someone elses working magsafe so that rules that out.

The Laptop had severe water damage so to get it this far was miraculous!

I have read the logic board has a special charge circuit and a couple of surface mount fuses that can go open circuit.... there is info on this on the net if you are into electronics on a surface mount level!

Some battery level is needed as it doesnt have a seperate PRAM battery so it relies on a charged main battery...so it would be nice to have a charging battery!

I dont need it portable but will have a closer look at the circuit and post up what i find. If it isnt the onboard fuses then it may be the IC's in the charging circuit...something i may not bother with! :(

same problem. no x though its recognized. its says not charging. i did all resets and what not

i bought the two parts i hope it fixes it.

This is a problem with the late 2008 alu MB. It has to be a design issue. I have read so many posts about this problem and they are nearly all coming from this model. This should be a guarantee repair as it is apparently connected to some design mistake or bad parts. Have someone been in contact with apple?

par

Same model (late 2008 13" Unibody). Same problem. I checked the DC Input with iStat and it's only provided 4W or 5W while the battery is providing the majority of the power at around 18W.

I'm stuck in Japan at the minute without the language capability of explaining this to someone so I will have to wait till May when I return home to do anything about it.

For those who are asking for an update: Sorry guys, I never found a solution. I sold the laptop with a full explanation to the next guy. Luckily Macs resell well.

Just repaired a MacBook Pro 13˝ Mid-2009 with same problem.

This one was swollen by severe battery damage.

MagSafe DC Board was replaced and the battery gets charged when tested with logic-board outside the case.

But curious thing, with logic-board screwed at bottom case, the battery gets no charged and green/amber led lights dissapear.

More curious yet, the MacBook starts fine and shows "Power Adapter" as source power (battery disconected at this test).

As a non ortodox solution I decided to mount the logic-board electrically issolated to the bottom-case, using kapton tape to cover the mounting points both on logic board itself and in the bottom case.

It is evident that the logic board has suffered some kind of electronic damage derived from swollen battery damage, but logic board repair service costs (plus shipping from my country to the specialiced one) excede bill.

Since this "isolated" MacBook is working well and battery gets charged, I will keep that way.

I will update if any new about.

Your original problem was probably corroded trace from Q7055 gate to CHGR_BGATE of U7000.

There are different places to check.

First are current sense resistors by battery, and by charger, if it sees battery, sees charger but won't charge it.

Second is line from U7000 to Q7055 transistor to the charger. This is if it sees the charger but only charges if it is off, or it blinks on and off like mad.

Third are pullup resistors on data line to SMC, usually R5281 & R5280 On Unibody models, this is if it sees no battery.

Fourth is onewire circuit, PP3V42_G3H via to U6901 is the first to corrode if it NEVER sees the charger. Also bad U7000, or bad voltage divider going to CHGR_ACIN pin of U7000 which allows it to send SMC_BC_ACOK to U6901 which allows U6900 to tell the SMC via SYS_ONEWIRE to turn the charger light on.

There are so many different potential solutions and the solution is dependent on your specific problem. Go take out a multimeter and figure out what it is. Analyze, compare, contrast, and learn.

Nice to see you here, Louis. I'm sure so many folks will be able to fix things they'd given up on with your expert advice. :)

Louis is their a program I can purchase to locate circuit, etc.. on macbook pro motherboards. It would help me a lot, I'm a disabled veteran with limited eye problems I suffer. I have the laptop schematic down loaded already. It works great, but some circuit I can't find.

par

schematic is useless without boardview, you need the boardview as well. If someone took your money for a schematic without providing a boardview, paypal claim them. None of us are psychic, we do not know where things are on unmarked boards without it being pointed out by some sort of diagram.

par

Louis you somehow taught me more than all those 4 years of bullshit instructor with a degree that knows to think but can't teach for $@$*. I thank you for all your free speech education when others wants 100k a year to give out info. Thank you.

par

Louis - first thanks for your youtube channel which has inspired me to take up advanced troubleshooting. While I always knew electronics/soldering etc., you have give me the confidence and tools to work on these things and learn a lot while doing this.

Just a few suggestions for further troubleshooting steps (in the desperate hope that it's not a logic board issue):

First, have you tried resetting the SMC? Directions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

Second, to eliminate the possibility of software issues, have you tried restarting the computer from an external hard drive to see if the issue persists?

Finally, I know you've tried your current power cable on other computers, but have you tried a different power cable on the problem computer?

I've had the same problem with my MB, it won't charge the battery itself but it will work with an already charged battery. I bought an external battery charger on eBay for $30. And it works well however I have no warning before the battery runs out of juice.

I just had the exact same thing happen to my 2008 MacBook.

Tried all the usual suspects, PRAM zap, SMC reset, swapping good batteries and power cables. the MB just doesn't recognize the battery in the Sys Profiler. There was some intermittent recognizing of the battery (after a SMC reset), but even in that case, showed a completely full battery as 0% and wasn't charging it, then it was back to the X over the battery.

I was contemplating replacing the magsafe board, but methinks it might be the logic board.

my MB got just slightly wet, however, there were no signs of any water entering the ports, AND, it's gotten wet before to no bad ends.

I am going to take the topcase off and inspect the LB. I had read a thread about cleaning the LB:

What should I do after I spill liquid on my device?

Which could be a whole lot of fun.

I haven't seen anyone mention this so I thought I would throw it out there. My macpro has done fine since the beginning until I replaced the battery. I kept sending back the batteries for a replacement and am now wondering if I should stop buying them off Ebay and pay the big bucks to Apple and get one that will charge when it totally runs out of juice. I am thinking that a cheaper battery may be the problem...anyone feeling this with me?

I had the same problem as the first poster. 2007 Core2Duo Macbook worked fine on AC and from charged battery, but did not charge the battery. The same battery, charged in another Macbook, worked and lasted for 4 hours. The problematic Macbook still recognized the battery, with System Profiler showing the full charge capacity (4500 mAh), percentage remaining, and charge cycles. Even though it cannot charge the battery, it still shows the full charge capacity even when the battery is fully drained.

Just had a very big problem with the battery. I had charged it in another Macbook, and was using it in the problematic Macbook. It lasted for about 4 hours before being fully drained. I was out of town and at that point I used the Macbook plugged into AC.

When I got home, I went to charge the drained battery in another Macbook, but to my surprise I found that the battery was completely dead. Would not charge and showed 0 full charge capacity. Power cords check out fine. The 2nd Macbook is able to charge its own battery just fine.

Do you think there is any connection between the non-charging problem and killing the battery? It was an excellent battery, with high full charge capacity and lasted for 4 hours. From one day to the next, it just died.

P.S. I have seen external battery chargers on eBay, but do not know how well they work. You take your battery out of the Macbook (or Powerbook) and charge it outside the computer. The AC cord plugs into the wall and has a connector that mirrors the layout of the battery connector on the battery (the part that goes into the battery connector in the battery bay).

I too thought of changing the Battery Connector, but had hoped to hear some positive feedback on this before doing so.

I've had the same problem too! I have a 2008 13" macbook aluminum unibody. I have just been running my computer off AC for a while now, but it super frustrating when it just barely becomes unplugged and dies. Is there any final word on if this is a logic board failure or not? Because I can afford to replace the Magsafe board, but I can't afford a full logic board replacement.

Is it possible to charge the battery manually, just by connecting the pin outs + & - pins to an imax B6AC battery charger.. If so, which pins should be connected..

Thanks in advance..

I cleaned the magnetic part on my computer real well, but the light was still only dim green and no charge. Then I got a bit nasty and started jiggling the magsafe connector into the space until finally I got a good connection, the light went bright green for a moment and then orange.

But now I'm afraid to remove the magsafe power cord from the computer...

Hi all,

I was having the same problem from last many months.

One day I was having problem with isight connectivity so I opened up my MBP and was locating the isight cable, I cam accross the Magsafe DC-In board connector (where the magsafe L connector connects). I just thought of cleaning it and oppent the two screws of it and cleaned it with the brush.

and rearranged all the things and started the MBP and know what ?? My isight is still faulty and my Magsafe charger is connecting like charm always since last 1 month. so the Loose connector of Magsafe In board conector on the logic board may be the culprit Which in my case When I oppened it and moved it around, It unknowingly did the trick. Also from that day onwards its getting less hot.

so just check it once!!

"getting less hot". I read that somewhere that when the unit gets too hot, it stops charging and shuts the unit down which did happen to me. After time, I am sure it has collected enough dust to interfere with charging and may be clogging up the fan. You may be on to something here.

Hi all, I have the same problem, not charging however working off battery and my power adapter works for others.

I am quite certain that it is a charger port issue as my port looks slightly different that others'.

My problem however is that I don't know how to fix/replace my port.

Is this something I can do myself, or an apple job (I'm studying so I'm not exactly financially set). If I can do this myself where do I get the parts and the manual and otherwise how much would the apple repair cost (relative to a DIY fix).

All useful help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Bob

I did replace the I/O board and seemed to be charging OK, then after one hour, just stopped charging. Battery lasted almost a day and was able to boot up. Then after battery died, nothing and cannot charge. Swapped with a new charged battery and again able to boot. Swapped, chargers, nothing. CHarger works on another MBP.

Now what?

Not a complete answer, but my attempt (Late 2008 Macbook Al Unibody):

When I plug the power adapter into another computer (where it works fine) and then plug it back into my own, the LED lights up orange before fading out. Does this indicate a loose connection somewhere in the power delivery system?

The battery (brand new Apple replacement) and power adapter both work as they should in other computers. Currently the power adapter is used as the computer's power source, and while it indicates that the 'battery is not charging,' the battery does eventually charge over an extended period of time (10+ hours).

The MagSafe DC in board has been replaced once before (about two years prior to the occurance of this 'battery is not charging' issue) due to water damage.

I'm not sure what triggered my computer to no longer want to charge the battery.

i also changed the battery connector and later the Left I/O board. both to no avail. logic board was replaced by apple, nearly a year ago. when i opened it, it didn't look new. strange! (i didn't get a good feeling about it, hope i'm wrong). should have replaced it myself for half the money. anyway, the problem isn't solved and it's very frustrating... mbp cuts out unexpectantly. wont start up from sleep at times. will see the battery for a few seconds and then the big X comes up! same problem with second battery... without battery it works in the same way... still more suggestions from anyone? surely hope so!

thanx

A1297 malfunctions with charging and the adaptor light, can be caused by either a failed DCin board, or a failed logic board. Symptoms of logic board failure are: no lights on the mag-safe, and a battery that indicates "not charging" at all times, but charges at a glacial pace, taking about 4 days to fully recharge from an exhausted state. If you actually run the battery out, the computer will shut down and not restart until the battery is recharged. Check for visible burns on the main circuit board before replacing the battery or DC board.

So my issues is a little different. It won't run just of the charger, it needs to have the battery. It shows when plugged in and shows correct battery life. It won't run down the battery either if plugged in, but it will not charge it. I can sometimes get it to charge by wiggleling the magsafe magnet around. Have tried several batteries and magsafe adapters. Is this a magsafe board issue or logic board? I guess for about $20 I can just change the magsafe board, but I don't want to throw any more money and time at this laptop. It's 08 MacBook Pro.

Just to add a little hope to this thread... i spilt water on an old A1181 here and got the 'Not Charging' problem after it had dried up.

No LED showing on any charger i tried.

Opening System Profiler / Power showed the power supply make model etc as "0" which means that the the Laptop has lost communication with the power supply....

http://www.righto.com/2013/06/teardown-a...

I havent tried repacing the Magsafe connector board yet, but as far as i can see, it just has an LC line filter on it, so i'm expecting to have to investigate the logic board, then give up.

However... I did notice that the "Not charging" battery IS actually slowly charging (coconut battery / system profiler shows me).

So leaving the charger plugged in, i'm able to use the laptop 'almost' as usual, and just leave it to finish charging overnight. (it charges at normal speed if its sleeping / shut down.)

i was skeptical about changing the magsafe board (it seems to only hold a dc choke and some capacitors) - but its definitely done the trick. the dead one had a lot of salt/residue on it, so i'm guessing that 18v + salt --> control pin was stopping the signal to switch the charger from trickle charge to fast charge. I'm going to clean the dead board with alcohol and see if it comes back to life.

par

just to add....

it's always worth opening system profiler and having a look to see what the mac 'thinks' is going on with the charger.

the last time i had weird charging behaviour, i did the reset PMU a couple of times and it sorted itself out :-)

finally, its worth noting that there is an overcurrent / thermal protection in the charger.. so the charger will disable itself if it gets too hot (i.e. charging a completely flat battery while you are watching flash video). To reset the fuse, let the charger cool down a bit, then unplug it from the mains supply for a few seconds.

I have (maybe had) the same issue - mid'10 MBP15"A1286 A7 820-2915-B

I had a minor spill, thoroughly cleaned & dried, laptop works fine, magsafe batt ok, repl dc-in board - no joy. left charging overnite 2 or 3 times no joy. Maybe a month later, picked it up again, tried charging, for the first time the green light was on for half second then out, left it for ~10-15 min no joy; unplugged charger figured capacitive charging maybe gave false green indication. Hour or 2 later attached charger again no lights but left it attached, got busy researching and looking for logic board fuse ~30-40 min later noticed amber light!! It started working. There are resettable SMT fuses but I don't see one on this board? No explanation for the delay, but its a gift horse - mouth thing!

Moral of this story, if its otherwise working normally, let it sit for a month (mine was sitting with back removed during that time) then let it charge for an hour or longer. Good luck!

I have the same issue but there is no damage to my machine. 20hr charge time. This happened after a reset of the machine.

It’s been said before in this thread but it just happened to me - check the seating of your MagSafe board. I was working on a 17” A1297 and there was a bend near MagSafe board. Long story short, unmounting and remounting the MagSafe port fixed my problem. Mine looked like it was fine and lined up properly but was giving the faint green light. After I popped it out and reconnected it the light was bright green and then orange when charging. Worth a shot before tearing it down.
