Can it enhance speed to upgrade to 4GBs when specs say 2GBs?

I went to Apple's Genius bar to see if I could stop random freezing when laptop is moved and to make more space on my 2006 Macbook.

They suggested I buy & put in a Solid State Hard drive (and upgrade RAM to 4 GB.

The HD install went easily and well. The RAM was way too big for my lil 06 Macbook so I'm returning it.

I tried to buy RAM but was told that my laptop specs say that I can only have 2GBs of RAM

THE BIG QUESTION: CAN I buy two 2GB Ram chips install them and GET better (faster) performance or NOT?

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we know your exact machine and give you the correct answer.

Thank you for answering.

My serial number is W87109CQWGL

It is a macbook 2006.

Now when I open my macbook it shows me a blue screen with a file folder that has a question mark in the middle of it.

I must have completely confused it when I added the external HD.

Thanks again from the apple-poor!

Do you have PC2-5300 DDR2 Min. RAM Speed: 667 MHz installed and what is your configuration now? Was the hard drive operating system working before you changed the RAM?

Your machine is not finding a valid system folder. If you have not already done so, start up from your original system DVD and format the new drive using Disk Utilities (found on the second page pull down menu). Then continue installing a system.

Update

Thank you for your answer. I am now having a continuation of this problem. Now the screen is blue and is showing me a question mark inscribed in a file folder. I have tried restarting holding key C, then inserting Mtn Lion 10.6 point something...but nothing resolved this blue screen question mark....

Do you have any advice on this? Especially with respect to the possibility that there is not enough RAM and that's why my laptop is confused?

When starting from your installation DVD, restart and push the disk in, push and hold he "C" key till the Apple icon appears. How much RAM do you currently have installed?

par

Is the "C" key the letter c or the apple command key beside the space bar?

Looking at the specs under the battery, it says "2.0/2x512/80/SD-DL White so that must mean I don't even have 2 GB.

The ifixit site is down right now, but I will send this and keep checking back for your response. Thank you so much.

WOW! I got to the disk utility but it will not let me verify or repair. I did connect the Sandisk Ext Hdrive but still no verify or repair. So I looked at restore and put Snow Leopard as source and sandisk as destination but am afraid to press restore because it will erase all on the destination disk. I was hoping that any programs (like MS Office) would remain.

Also, it will not let me eject the ext HD...

What do I do next?

You currently have two 512k memory sticks for a total of 1 GB of RAM. Your machine will take up to 4 GB of RAM. You can mix the RAM. It sounds like you have a 10.6 installation DVD but I can't really tell. Put the Sandisk in a drawer for now, it is not helping. Tell me exactly what is happening when booted from the DVD and using Disk Utility.

Booting from the Start up DVD-Noise, apple icon, little wheel spins, it beeps, shows purple screen Mac OS X-a window asking for Language preference, clicked the arrow to continue.

Next window "Install Mac OS X"-select where to install Mac OS X, but nothing is in the box.

The install disk is Snow Leopard 10.6.3 ver 230.1.1(262)

This window says 'to repair disk using Disk Utility...choose option from Utilities Menu' OR allows me to press continue. If I press continue, the next screen is the select disk window with nothing in the box...

The UTILITIES choice on the menu bar shows 8 choices: Startup Disk, Reset Password, Firmware Password Utility, Disk Utility, Terminal, System Profiler, Network Utility, Restore System from Backup.

Originally, when I put the sandisk drive in, everything worked. THEN my screen turned! It made one revolution to the left, showed a network window-that's when the screen went blue.

Yes - The best, easiest and least expensive way to enhance the speed of your machine is to max out the RAM. Although not "officially" reported/supported by Apple many of the 2006 Macbooks could access and use 3 GB of RAM. In order to do that it is recommended you install 4GB in two 2GB chips of which only 3 can actually be used due to limitations of the processor design.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

The RAM I got in the mail was not the correct size, so I did not change the RAM. I did put in the sandisk solid state drive. Everything worked fine. Then it started freezing so I had to shut down and restart a few times.

Now when I tried to start up, I get the flashing question mark.

By configuration do you mean what RAM I have in? I have two 1 GB RAM chips, side by side.

Thanks

Georgia
