Turns off when disconnected.
Try using a iPod dock same thing when I use a USB cable but iPod dock turns it on but and charges but once I take it off it turns off

Jon, sounds like a power issue. I'd start off by replacing the battery. Use this guide to change it. The battery is available at places like this. Once you got that accomplished, reevaluate. If that should fail you could have issues with the dock connector, i.e. broken, bend or corroded pins, as well as a faulty PMIC. Start with the battery since this will provide you with a known good point, should further trouble shooting become necessary. Hope this helps, good luck.
