SD Cards not writable, Reader changeable?

Hello, my SD Card Reader won't write on all my SD Cards any more. Aperture can't delete Pictures. If I use an USB Card Reader, everything is fine. The Cards are working fine.

I think the reader is broken. Do I have to change the Logic Board or is the Card Reader changeable? Thanks for your answers.

Have you tried a virgin SD card to see if you can copy to it and delete files from your system to it? Are you able to see the files on the SD card via your system?

With a magnifying glass look into the connector do you see any damaged pins? It's possible the connector is only dirty. Try cleaning it with a non-lubracating electronics spray cleaner.

Sorry to say the connector is part of the logic board so you can't replace it easily (need to de-solder it and solder a new one on). This is a delicate soldering job it maybe more than you want to tackle.

Are you sure the connector is bad and not the SC card? Often the card is worn or the switch is loose.

The reader is nothing more than a collection of contact pins in a shell. Nothing here to test from the outside. But you could shine a flashlight and using a magnifier inspect the contacts to make sure they aren't damaged or something is stuck inside (piece of paper). A short blast of can'ed air is all you should use here. Have you tried using a USB card reader on your system to make sure the cards are good?

Yes, in one PC notebook all cards are read and formatting, only in my Mac and my sister Mac don't read. I will try cleaner contacta pin again.

thx!

What I was asking was if you had a USB reader which which to plug into your Mac system to see if the reader worked that way. It's possible the format of the SD card is not readable with your system. What is your OS-X version?

Seems to be an on/off switch on the left side of the slot, inside the reader. Yes, inside the reader. It detects where the lock/unlock switch on the SC card is (lock or unlock). Mine used to be fine. Card locked: "read only". Card unlocked: "you can read and write".

NOW...the lock/unlock slider on the cards must be IN THE MIDDLE, in JUST THE RIGHT PLACE between locked and unlocked, and THEN, you can read & write. Unlocked (all the way up): "you can only read". Locked (all the way down): "you can only read". In the middle, JUST THE RIGHT PLACE: "you can read and write.

It's a flimsy little piece of metal that contacts with another, like a thermostat's contacts, but seems to slip down or just wasn't made well.

The work-around has worked for me. But for how long? External USB card readers work without fail.( Unless, they're from the same factory in Shanghai as the computer....)

@davidshanen - The problem here is the card edge wears down or the quality of the SD card is not up to spec. To test get a new unopened good name brand SD card (i.e. Samsung) slide it in does the reader work? Now try your card. If you have access to a good measuring caliper and measure the width as well as the detent slot on the other side you'll see the bad card is worn or slightly short. What I do to fix this is to put some tape across the switch to add a little more push. Do make sure you don't cover the contacts! That should fix it.
