Replaced dock connector, but it doesn't work.

I decided to replace my old dock connector while I was replacing my front panel because it wouldn't interface with a VW iPod cable after a bath in some coffee (it would still charge and play over music of a speaker dock though).

When I swapped the new dock connector in the phone wouldn't charge or play over a speaker dock at all. I double checked all my work and wore gloves the entire time.

In an effort to rule out a defective part I swapped my old dock connector back in and the phone charges again.

I suspect that the dock connector I got is a defective part, but still have one persistent issue. When making a voice call the phone only picks up my voice over speakerphone. This issue was not present before I replaced the dock and front panel.

Is it true the bottom microphone is for voicecalls and the top noise-cancelling microphone is used as the main microphone when on speakerphone?

Options

Yes it is. The microphone that you are interested in is part of the dock connector. It appears that is where all of your problems seem to originate from.

I figured out that the the rubber boot was blocking the microphone. Now to figure out how to get it on right.

Also, I re-tried the new dock and it's still unresponsive.

If the mic in the new dock connector does not work, nor the charging, double check your work. If that checks out, I'd contact the vendor and exchange the dock connector.

I'm nearly positive the dock is defective. My major problem now is that I can't get the mic boot seated in a way that doesn't block the mic.
