Home button works only sometimes. Why?

A friend has an iPad 2 GSM, and the home button suddenly stopped working. He says he has not dropped it. It just stopped working. I see some marks that make it looks like it has bin dropped sometime in the past. What can be wrong?

I made a full restore. did not help. Any suggestions?
