Why did my sound suddenly stop working?

A few days ago, I tried to play some videos on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 laptop. However, the sound simply is not present. I tried everything. I checked to see that it was unmuted. I turned the volume all the way up. I even restarted my computer. However, nothing has worked, and there is still no audio on my laptop. So what should I do? Thanks! :)

my AA1 722's sound goes out every 2-3 mins for about 30-60 seconds and comes back, very irritating. I have not found a fix yet, system restore does nothing. I've even checked with the registry configuration. Is there a fix?

Abanoub Marcus, check in the device manager to make sure that your audio device still shows up. You should also try and get the audio drivers uninstalled and than do a fresh install of those.

How do you do that?

an easier explanation would be nice

Hi @Sophia Sheppard,

Right click on Windows start button, left side of Taskbar, and click on Device Manager.

When it open scroll down to Sound, Storage and Game Controllers.

Click on arrowhead to expand and then find your audio controller.

If it has a red cross, right click on the entry and select enable and then see if it works.

If it has a yellow exclamation mark, right click on it and select update drivers and follow the prompts.

If still no good, right click on the entry and select uninstall, restart the laptop and check if Windows has detected the audio controller and reinstalled it correctly and that it is working

Hopefully this is is easier.

@jayeff okay, so I have deleted and reinstalled the sound drivers, and done basically everything short of calling tech support. the problem is still persistent, and i have no idea why the sound has stopped working. there are no updates needed for my computer, and it's getting really annoying having no audio. if someone could help, that would be great. (my dad's an IT and he can't get it functioning.)

Hi @annasbanana2008 ,

What is the model number of the laptop?

What OS is installed?

OK now bear with me. Just verifying that you've checked the following, just in case ;-)

Checked in Device Manager that the sound controller is working OK (right click on sound controller entry > properties > general tab > device status box)

Quick access to Device Manager if you have Win 10 installed is to right click the Windows Start button, left side of Taskbar and click on the Device Manager link

Checked in Control Panel > Sound > Playback Tab set to "speakers", Communications Tab set to "do nothing"

To access Control panel (if Win 10) click on Windows start button -left side of Taskbar, type Control Panel in search box and then click on Control Panel app that appears.

If the laptop has a headphones socket, have you plugged in a set of headphones and checked if audio is there or not?

Have you run a system file check to ensure that all the OS system files are there?

Click on Windows start button and type cmd in search box. When Command app appears right click on the app and select run as administrator.

When the cmd window opens type sfc /scannow then press the enter key. Yes there is a space between the sfc and the / Be patient as it takes a while to check if all the files are there

As a further thought since I don't know what model number laptop you have, some laptops (don't know about Acer), have options in BIOS regarding audio. Have you checked in BIOS to see if there are any audio options at all?

Norton deletes the Driver Download stating it is unsafe

Tell Norton to ignore it - if you you have downloaded from ACER web site. Programs like IOBit Driver Booster are also good for updating drivers.

you just need to go step by step - just update the sound driver and check the playback sound device and make sure sound is not locked . for any other help visit http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/det...and see if this works for you .

Hi,

This can be a video codec problem if only a single video is not giving out sound.

Try reinstalling the sound drivers if no file is giving out sound.

IF that did not work then its time to buy a USB sound card and external speakers for your laptop.

Good luck.

I had the same problem, no solution from the internets worked. What I did was to start my computer with Ubuntu to check if the hardware was OK, which it was. Then back to Windows 10 and the speakers were working again,

Apparently, Windows skiped to comunicate to the speakers to put them on “working mode”, but saved somewere in its memory that it has, so no matter what I did, Windows continued to “think”: I already told the speakers to work ,so they should be ready to work. And no matter what reinstalation, update or restart you do, Windows didn´t bother to comunicate with the hardware again to check if indeed it was in working mode. Ubuntu did it as soon I started with it, and left the hardware on that state, so when I went back to Windows it was properly set.

Ubuntu 1 - Windows 0

Good Grief!! Like they always say, the simplest answer is usually the best. I tried upload drivers, downloading drivers, checking all my volumes.... was beginning to think my system just wasn't working. Really, all I had to do was right click, then sounds, then enable speakers...... THANK YOU!!!!!!!
