boot takes more than 10 minutes

Computer takes 12-14 minutes to boot. I have gone to forums and have tried the following: took out all start-up items other than finder; cleared desktop and put most items into other finder folders; made sure all dock items are not set to load on start up; booted in safe mode; booted in verbose mode and wrote down where hangups seem to occur but don't know what to do about them; booted in a test account; disconnected all peripherals except keyboard and mouse; tried to get rid of all programs that are no longer functional (might have missed some). No matter what I have tried the fastest it has booted has been 12 minutes. I usually leave my computer on and in sleep mode but at times it is necessary to boot it. I am hoping there are other options than a full system restore.

It could well be a failing HD, and I have been hoping I don't have to do the repair from the install disk as that would mean FINDING it! I have been cleaning off a lot of detritus with junk no longer needed and bloated photo files. And I DEFINITELY use Time Machine and have my disk partitioned so I have a partition to use for photos and movies. Been moving things onto that section of the external drive as well. Since doing all of this things have improved quite a bit but still more to go. When all else fails I will definitely use your suggestion. Thank you very much for your response.

If your boot drive becomes full (that means less than 20% of its size free) there's no room for VMEM and SWAP files which would slow down the machine. Cleaning the disk of junk - while a good idea - will not repair or fix failing bearings. Nor will it repair a damaged (messed up) MBD (master boot directory) only running a disk utility, or, replacing the physical drive can "fix" those sorts of issues.

Sounds to me like a failing HD (common on a machine of that age). Boot from your install disk and run Tools->Disk Tools-> Disk first aid: repair disk... see what it says. If there's no problems run AHT from your install disk.

Hope you have / keep a current backup of your essential files.
