Replacement battery only took charge once.
My 3GS stopped taking a charge. I replaced the battery, thank you iFixit! I was very careful, and when I was done I put the phone on the charger without booting it up.
Success! It charged rather slowly I thought, but it did charge completely. Everything worked. The screen even seemed a bit brighter. I was elated.
The charge did not last as long as I thought it should, and when I put it back on the charger, it would not charge.
It gradually drained out. Now it will not turn off, and when I touch the home button it shows the battery symbol, with just a sliver of red, and there is a lightning bolt symbol below that. It is on the wall charger, but connecting to a computer had the same result.
Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that I did read answers to similar questions on this forum. As a result I did try opening the phone again and making sure all of the ribbon connectors were securely seated.

So the new battery behaves like the old one? you could try to get the battery replaced once more. If that does not work, you may have to check a bit deeper for a solution. Check the dock connector, measure the voltage on the battery contacts with the phone plugged in to see what you get. Also check the charging and battery fuse for continuity.

Well, it is doing what the old battery did, except that it did take one full charge.
I don't see any problems with the dock connector. I don't have the equipment to check voltage. But I could buy a simple continuity tester.
Does iFixit have instructions for replacing fuses? Do they sell the fuses?
Thanks oldturk!

A meter will definitely work. Once you find out if you have continuity, we can see what else we can find. I am sure we could make some guides for the fuses:-) and could also find a link on where to get those.:-) Start with a power test and continuity. Even the cheapest meter will work for this;-)

Mr. oldturkey, I now have a cheapy Radio Shack tester. I was going to work with it this weekend, but Radio Shack did not tell me that I needed to buy a battery for it. I now have it set to go, but I'm also trying to get a garage built before the snow flies. I will try to check the battery contacts tonight and I'll get back to you.
