Device working after spill, turned off, won't power on

I was talking to a friend overseas and was trying to show him what I was eating (muesli) and I spilled milk all over the keyboard. I got a towel and mopped it up as quickly as I could and it kept working for about an hour after with no ill effects other than the shift-key thinking it was pressed down all the time and the trackpad thinking I was using many more fingers than I actually was.

Turned it off to pull it apart and inspect the damage, in doing so I've accidentally broken the cable from the logic board to the LED battery indicator. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the board other than a bit of residue around the bases of some of the connectors but doesn't appear to have soiled any joints.

I've put it back together today after about a month of drying/sitting in pieces and connected the power cord, I'm getting no LED on the magsafe adapter and I have confirmed the outlet is working. All the connections appear to be sound as far as I can tell but could it be the combination of that battery indicator and the fact that I still have the back off it while testing that's stopping it from starting? There are little gold nipples around the perimeter of the board which seem to have some travel to them like little switches, do they have any effect?

These forums have been very helpful in the past but this is my first time posting.

How did you repair the broken cable? That might be your problem.

Haven't repaired the cable, I was unsure if it would affect boot. I feel it's probably worth buying a new cable and replacing it if possible.

While it's very easy to short out a machine powering it up while open, there is no reason it has to be fully assembled to boot. Often while repairing machines you may want to reassemble but not screw down the case.
