Can I replace the Facetime HD Camera?

Hi,

I replaced the SuperDrive in my MBP about a year ago now and since then have had to swap it around a few times when I've needed to use the SuperDrive again.

In the process of doing this I must have broken the ribbon cable which connects the camera to the logic board. This bugger: https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

Now, when I try to use the webcam on my MBP I just get a black screen instead of a picture, no error message about a missing webcam or anything, just black.

I was wondering if there was any way to either a) Fix just the cable, or b) Replace the entire Facetime HD camera.

I've not been able to find the parts anywhere online.

Options

Yes you can do either but they are very advanced DIY repairs getting access to the camera/cable is a lot of work, and reassembly can also be tough. You'd have to locate the parts & directions elsewhere as they don't appear to be listed in iFixit's parts catalogue.

A workaround would be to purchase a USB web cam (be certain it's one with Mac drivers).

I'm thinking more resale value, the only thing I can think of is replacing the whole display assembly but then I'll need to pay around £130 for a new display unit. Not sure if it would just be better to sell it with the webcam broken, doubt that would knock £130 off its value.

Totally your call... if the person you want to sell the laptop to doesn't use facetime/skype it might not be worth the time and money you'd put into this project. Yes replacing the entire top assembly would be the easiest... providing your damage is to the cable, not the connector (logic board). You could see what a place like iFixit would offer you for the machine as a parts source... that would give you a bottom line on its worth used.
