MacBook Pro 15" Early 2011

I've upgraded my Optical drive for a Samsung SSD 840EVO with the intention of this being my startup disk - I followed this tutorial to do so: Installation d'un second SSD dans le MacBook Pro 15" Unibody début 2011

I initially wiped the pre-existing 500GB SATA disk before installation, when I boot my laptop in recovery and go Disk Utility I couldn't re-install Mountain Lion or Mavericks on the new SSD, I tried creating a partition and the error that kept coming up was: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed

I've read elsewhere on this forum and on the net, seemingly my SSD is compatible with my laptop at SATA 6Gb/s but even if it couldn't read 6Gb/s it's also compatible with 3Gb/s. It can see the drive so it couldn't be the cable connecting the drive could it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm a total novice at doing anything like this.

Ho No! Your between a rock and a hard place here ;-{

You need to have a bootable disk HD or SSD (ThunderBolt, FireWire, or USB) with the Mountain Lion installer to install your OS onto your new SSD. If you hadn't deleted your current HD you could have used it to install a fresh copy of OS to your SSD internally.

Did you create a recovery disk (CD/DVD) or USB thumb drive? If you do you could also use it.

OK you don't have any bootable disk nor a recovery disk. Now what? In that case you'll need to visit the nearest Apple Store, but before you do take the SSD out and put back your optical drive so its back as it was first. Once they fix you up. get a USB thumb drive and make it bootable. Once you are sure you have it working (go into the Startup control panel to set it as the boot disk and test it out) Then copy over the Mountain Lion Installer app and then do your thing!

Thanks for your help Dan. I should have been clearer, I did exactly this with the bootable USB thumb drive and have reinstalled Mountain Lion (but on the pre existing 500Gb SATA drive). All is working fine as normal but the new SSD drive is not.

If I try and format the drive or do anything in Disk Utility to it I get the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed

On startup I get the error The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. - although I can see the drive in Disk Utility, I'm just unable to do anything to it.

Could it be a dodgy connection cable from my installation, I was very delicate in taking everything apart and putting it back together but could that be the answer?

Lets try this: First disconnect your HD for now, then boot up under your Thumb drive. delete the partition and re-create it using Disk Utility. Make sure the partition type is GPT and then format the partition again make sure it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Can you get that far? If you can try installing the OS. Does it fail then? If so you may have to update the SSD's firmware. Here's the link to the updates Firmware updates

A bit of an odd one, but it's working now.

When I initially disconnected the existing HD it didn't boot up at all, I kept getting the 6003F error message. I then replaced the existing HD with the new SDD just incase it was anything to do with the connection (or I thought it could have been a duff caddy), this now allowed me to format the drive and then install Mountain Lion on it. I then re-installed the existing HD in the optical drive slot and that now works too along side of it, so it wasn't the connection or the caddy. I don't understand why this was but I'm just pleased it's working now.
