Can you put 3 storage drives in a mac?

I am looking to upgrade my iMac. I was wanting to add a 2TB HDD for my files on mac os while keeping my 500 GB HDD to be a windows bootcamp drive. I also wanted to add an SSD to be a mac os boot drive. Is it possible to have all three drives in my mac? Do you have any recommendations?

Sorry No, you can't have more than two SATA devices in your system.

But you might be able to gain some improvement by using a hybrid drive (a single device that has a HD with a SSD cache). Seagate makes a nice one they call a SSHD. Here's more on it Seagate SSHD. Follow this IFIXIT guide on how to swap out your drive iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Hard Drive Replacement

But before we can go there we first need to see what HD you currently have in your system. Go to About This Mac > More Info... > System Report and look under SATA tell us what you have now. Why this is important is you normally need to switch out the same manufacture of HD. If you don't have a Seagate drive you may need to replace the thermal sensor cable as well.

OK, so lets say you go with this SSHD what to do with your current HD and you stated you wanted to still have Windows BootCamp. You should be able to use your drive internally if you want to give up your Optical drive following this IFIXIT guide Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Dual Hard Drive

So with this setup you gain almost what you want. - Good Luck!

I Have a: WDC WD5000AAKS-40V6A0 HDD

Are there any hybrid drives from Western Digital?

Your ears must have been twitching ;-} WD just introduced a new 2.5" dual drive Black^2 which is not the same as a hybrid! This drive uses a single SATA connection but is in fact two drives! a HD and an independent SSD drive. While its' intended for laptops it can also work in your system as well. WD had been expected to release a SSHD drive this fall they had intro'ed in the spring as a 'me too drive' (as they were late in getting a competing unit out). Many people (including my self) have wanted a drive like this for our laptops. As good as a hybrid is, sometimes you want to have more control on what is were. This is the market I think WD wanted to satisfy. Don't get me wrong I still love the 2nd gen. hybrids and will still be using them for our systems as my users don't want (or need) the level of control this drive offers. I will likely replace my hybrid drive for one in one of my systems when it is released.

Sadly, WD does not offer a 3.5 hybrid so you'll need to switch out the sensor cable for a Seagate or Toshiba unit.
