MacBook backlight dies at certain screen positions, almost unusable
Hi, all! I have a 2.2 C2D MacBook that's less that three years old but becoming almost unusable as the screen backlight goes dark unless it is partially closed. This is something that has gotten progressively worse over time, from one "bad angle" to a wider and wider arc and now it is really bad. I have been told it's a cable issue or an inverter issue or a display issue...how to narrow it down?

Thanks very much! I am about to order the cable and have a go at it. If I am going to take things apart to do this, are there any other fixes or low-cost upgrades I should do while I'm in there? Cheers, Matthew

Maxing the RAM is relatively cheap.

- Dust off internal components and logic board with compressed air (can).
- Visually check all cables and connectors
- Check if all screws are tighten enough on logic board and internal parts
- Remove the optical drive, unscrew the 3 top philips screws, dust off the internal mechanism, the case slot and clean the laser lens with a Qtip and isopropyl alcohol. Apply teflon based grease to moving arms:

- Fan: dust off the fan, lift the top round sticker and inject a drop of sewing machine oil in the top center hole, put back the round sticker and add a piece of scotch tape on it.

Top case: turn it upside down and gently tap on it to dislodge small particules stuck under the keys. Finish the job with compressed air between the keys.

Matthew - did the cable work?

No, it didn't. I went through the whole process to take everything apart and replace the cable, but the problem has not been fixed. At this point I am planning to wipe the hard drive and take it to a local technician to fix as a last-ditch effort, otherwise I'm in the market for a new Macbook, or maybe an iPad.
