Upgraded To Dual SSD / HDD - Laptop now running slow

I upgraded my original 500GB HDD to a 256GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro a while back and it was amazing the difference in performance and speed. I have now replaced my optical drive with the 500GB HDD that came out of my MP as I liked the idea of more storage.

However the performance has now gone downhill and there is a noticeable difference in speed and performance. Running just the SSD applications opened instantly, now with the HDD in as well I am having to wait around 15seconds for it to realise that I selected an application to load.

Is there any way that I can improve the performance again without taking the HDD out and putting the optical drive back in?

My Macbook Pro Spec is;

8GB RAM

2GHz i7

We faced the same dilemma on how to setup a dual drive in a MacBook Pro. Facing the same issue as the optical drives I/O is much slower.

We focused on putting the data files on the HD only and the Apps on the SSD. The only problem with than is you need to have enough free space on the SSD for virtual RAM and other OS/App cache needs. Which means you need to have around 1/3 of the SSD unused.

We also found the amount of work moving things about wasn't worth all of the effort so we went with hybrid (SSHD) drives instead.

If we were talking about an iMac then having a dual HD & SSD setup works much better.

There could be a number reasons that you are getting slow speed.

Which optibay you use can have an effect, since there are a number of manufactuerers beyond the name brand OWC (macsales.com).

Some people are reporting that sometimes automagic speed detection fails and jumpers must manually be set to get the proper throughput.

Also if you are sleeping the optibay drive to save on battery that would make the response time longer. So you might increase response time and sacrifice battery life.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.
