Laptop shuts off when not plugged into external power supply

While traveling I noticed that my MacBook Pro would shut off after about 1 minute when not plugged in. Is this a DC-in board problem or something else completely?

Maybe it is time for a new battery. Yes it spends most of its time plugged in.

If it's the original battery it could be that. Batteries die - how long they last depends upon how they are used/abused. If the laptop has been squeezed or had items stacked on it the battery could be cracked. Over 3 years can be a long time (like "dog years") for a battery,

While it's plugged in use System Profiler, or, System Inforation: Power to find out how many cycles are on the battery and if it's charging. High cycles and failure to charge indicate need for battery replacement. Batteries have onboard chips that report if they are "good" or "bad".

Be careful of the sudden shutdowns. Keep important data backed up - repeated crashing of the system can screw up the MDB of a HD so that it will no longer work. You should not let this go - find a solution ASAP.

Greetings

Looking at the System Information the battery indicates it is charging / cycle count is 31 Condition Normal.

Thanks for the reminder of the crashes, once I realized what was happening, I keep it plugged in.

That's a very low cycle count for a machine that age… you've kept it plugged in a lot? If so that can shorten battery life. A new battery might be in order - no other events/damage to the machine? - For future reference you posted a Comment in the place where only Answers belong.
