Cracked Screen repair : can't find small gap from step 5

After being dropped (resulting in a cracked screen), this iPad was left under pillow that somebody sat on, cracking it further. So I ordered all the necessary tools and parts from iFixit.

I got as far as Step 5, where it says "There is a small gap in the iPad's adhesive ring in the upper right corner of the iPad, approximately 2.0 inches (~5 cm) from the top of the iPad." Two of us, using a magnifying glass and bright light, aren't able to find any small gap anywhere along the edges, not just "approximately 2.0 inches from the top."

Note that some time elapsed between when I first tried prying blindly at what I thought must be the correct spot and when I got a friend with a bright light and magnifying glass. So the iOpener and iPad had completely cooled off. (I'm not convinced that the iOpener was ever hot enough to begin with.) Does the gap become visible with the application of heat?

Am I missing some crucial step that would cause the gap to become visible? Is there a way to open the iPad without finding the "small gap?"

Don't worry about the gap just get the iOpener tool hot enough to heat the glass start at the right bottom and work you way up to the volume buttons, don't pry in this area! then start at the top corner and continue to work around the iPad digitizer.
