Is battery replacement necessary after minor liquid damage?

I dropped my iphone 5 into a toilet two days ago. It had a full otterbox on and was removed from the water quickly. I powered it down, removed the case and dried it off, although there was very little moisture on the phone itself. Within 5 minutes it was in rice. I left it in there for about 24 hours before taking it out and trying it. Everything seemed to be working fine, I charged it to 100% without problem and I thought it was in the clear. However after use for several hours I noticed the battery percentage stuck at 98%. I thought this was odd and did a reboot to which it powered back up at 20%. After more use it began shutting off randomly. I decided to place it back in the rice for another 24 hours and now battery percentage seems to be functioning normally however it still does randomly shut off at times.

I checked the external liquid indicator by the sim card and it has not been triggered. I'm wondering if I should give it more time in rice, or try taking it in and see what the Genius bar says? My warranty is over but if it's a battery problem I would most likely go elsewhere and get it replaced, or attempt a repair myself.

Do you advise against using the phone?

Tianna, as with an immersion, the importance is to not turn it on, or trying to sync/charge it, as this may increase the likelihood of shortcircuiting any components. Remove the battery, and disassemble it right down to the logic board. Clean everything with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a soft brush, including all connectors and cable ends. Check for any burned or missing components. You may have to repeat this step a couple of times. Once it is cleaned, reassemble it and replace the battery, this is not optional but a must, then reevaluate for any real damage. It is absolutely possible that all of your problems originate from the battery, but you do want to avoid any failure later on. So, definitely clean it very well. Hope this helps, good luck."

So you believe I would have better luck attempting to fix it myself rather than taking it to Apple?

I believe that yes you would. Apple does really not do any repairs, especially not water damage. You may get a credit toward purchasing a new phone.

Just get the battery replaced. While the rice trick will help, it won't get the moisture that's build up on the inside of the phone, it will only suck in the moisture that's on the outside of the phone. Also I would never recommend turning the phone back on after it has gotten contact with any liquid substance, it may end up causing a short circuit on the motherboard.
