iPhone keeps on restrating after water damage

My iPhone 4 got dipped in water for about 2~3 seconds. Wiped it off then placed it in a plastic container with rice (covering the headphones with a tissue). Left it there for two days. I turned it on and everything was normal.

After 2~3 days, the screen just went dim - the phone itself is turned on - I can hear the tone when I connect it to a computer OR I can feel the vibrations when I put it in mute mode. I can even turn it off by pressing the power button for 5 seconds and then randomly swiping the upper part of the screen to the right (i.e. the "power off" swipe).

I tried factory resetting it and it worked -- now the screen is turned on while the phone itself is working. Problem is, it's now constantly rebooting after 2~3 minutes.

What should I do?

nikkoewan, rice is great for cooking, but it does not repair your phone, nor will it prevent corrosion. Since your phone did have an immersion the first thing I suggest doing is to not longer try to turn it on or charge/sync it. It is easily possible that you are shortening out parts on the logic board i.e. the power management IC. If anything, disassemble your phone using these guides. Once you have that done, clean your phone with high grade isopropyl alcohol and this guide. It was written for a 3g but all the points are valid for your phone as well. Once its clean, replace the battery, this is not optional but a must. If you do not clean your phone properly or change the battery, you will run the risk of failure from corrosion later on. After all that reassemble your phone and re-evaluate for further (if any) damage. Hope this helps, good luck.

Nicely put oldturkey03! I think that covers it better than my answer!

Than you Joshua. Not a bad answer on your part:-) Over the years on ifixit, I just learned that it pays off to be a bit more precise since we do not know the background of the person that is asking.

I think that's the common answer I got. The problem is that:

a. I don't have the tools to open an iPhone 4 (mine has I think the pentalobe screws).

b. I'm not really adept at opening a phone plus I sweat easy so whenever I try to clean electronics (like my laptop, for example), sweat is a big problem since that could further corrode the parts.

Maybe I'll just find someone who can do what oldturkey said OR just dip my iPhone in isopropyl alcohol (not the LCD though as the guide you both linked stated it's not a good solution) and then dry it off.

nikkoewan, it is a pretty involved job, especially if you do not have the tools. As for the perspiration, you could always wear some latex gloves. Anyhow, it might be worth your while to have it done commercially. All the best to you.

The Rice Method is not an actual repair. Rice may absorb much of the moisture, but what you are experiencing is a result of continuing corrosion within your device. Your phone needs to have a proper liquid damage assessment and repair performed. You can find a technique guide for liquid damage here. I would suggest reviewing it and deciding if you are comfortable performing the described steps yourself. If you do decide to do it yourself be sure that you have the proper tools.

Good luck!

Thanks for the answer (and link). I knew that rice was just to absorb the moisture. I was just hoping it didn't do more damage.
