My car will not crank Help!

Hi I have a 1999 VW Jetta. The other day I get back home and parkmy car to wash it. I get done get in to move it and nothing. The dash lights and stuff come on and the door dings. No noise from turning the key. I tried to jump it and nothing happened. I went andbbought a new relay, nothing. I'm going to check the fuses to see if that tells me anything. Please anyone that knows the problem please let me know. Thanks much Karalee

Karalee, which relay did you replace? did you check for any power to the relay? Do you have the ability to check your starter? What engine size is it and is it standard or automatic transmission?

Options

You can have enough "juice" to run the lights and radio but not enough to crank the car. Check the age (warranty) in months on the battery. Should be clearly printed on the top. If it's near or over the expected life I suspect that could be your problem.

Used to be Sears could run a free electrical system check… to ensure the battery is getting charged when you drive (lose fan belt, bad alternator would cause that). Many new cars have "trouble codes" that most local auto parts store can read/interpret for you.. problem is you have to get your car to the store.
