The first generation of G4 system optical drive was some what limited on what disks it could read.
4X SuperDrive - Apple reports that this 4X DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive "writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, [and] reads CDs at up to 32x speed." It uses an Ultra ATA/100 bus.
That last in the series had a much better optical drive:
6X DL SuperDrive - Apple reports that this "16X" DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW SuperDrive "writes DVD-R discs at 16x speed, writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 6x speed, reads DVDs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 24x speed, [and] reads CDs at up to 32x speed." It uses an Ultra ATA/100 bus.
So depending on the disk it might not be readable by your system. * The drive info is from EveryMac web site.
If your system is running you could look at the '''System Profiler"" application to find out which drive you have or you can just open it up and checkout the part online for its specs.
