My wet dog jumped onto my keyboard and now the 'g' key does not function at all. Brought it to Apple who told me that it would not be covered and would cost over £200 to repair. Surely there must be a simpler solution. The 'g' key does not function AT ALL. My laptop has been like this for the past two months.

Have you tried popping the keycap off and check underneath?
First make sure you system is fully off before doing anything. Here's a good video on how: How to remove and clean Macbook Pro keyboard keys.
Using some distilled water (not tap!) on a Cotton swab (Q-Tip) try cleaning the area. Then go over the area again this time with a good grade of Isopropyl alcohol (85% or better).
