When I power on my laptop, my screen stays black. I've tried hooking it up to an external monitor and I still don't get any image. What could it be and how would I be able to check myself?

Patrick C, "external monitor and I still don't get any image" means that you are having GPU issues. The GPU is part of the logic board and not easy to repair. I would suggest a reflow of the GPU ( or a professional reball) or replace the motherboard. Hope this helps, good luck.
