Erratic touchscreen behavior after replacement.

I did a touchscreen replacement on my very first iPad Air the other day. I was quite proud of myself in that I didn't cut any cables or damage any of the antennae or other components (like I've done on other iPad models).

The customer has since contacted me advising that the iPad is going a little crazy. It will work fine for a while (10-15 minutes) but will then start randomly launching apps or begin typing...almost like its possessed.

I told him to try a hard reset (holding the home and lock buttons down to reboot the device) but it is still experiencing the same problem.

Any advice?

Thanks.

I haven't done an Air yet but I'm assuming its similar to the problems with iPad mini if you haven't got tape in the proper places along the bottom of the digitizer near the home button. If the digi makes any contact without tape in between it will be wonky. The iFixit guide doesn't make reference to that but its CRUCIAL the new digitizer has tape exactly as the original did. you have to transfer the tape over, it will not come pre installed.

Do you have pictures of where you place the tape?

Alicia, reference the photos half way down on this thread:

iPad Mini Home Button Not Working After Digitizer Replacement

The Air does not have tape like the mini but it does have a foam strip. As others have said, if the back of the digitizer touches the frame, it will cause funky touch behavior.

Hi, take a look at this post and it may be helpful with a picture of how the digitizer cable should fold in. I screwed up 2 digitizers this way until I understood the problem.

Where did you buy it from and how much did you pay for the digitizer, if the supplier you bought it from buys it for say £10 and then marks it up by say 30% then they will sell it for +- £15, if you buy one for £45 and the mark up is the same then he has paid £30 and chances are they will be of very different quality.

Even eBay suppliers have a set markup and dont just suck a price out of fresh air and i can assure you that there is a reason why they are cheap and probably 2nd grade or very bad copies from a factory in Chengdu China.

I have fitted a lot of digitizers and have tried many suppliers and have a box of them that are faulty and if i put them side by side i can see the difference in quality compared to the supplier i use to buy all my apple spares from now.

My answer is a bit long but im just trying to get across the point.

You pay cheap price you get cheap quality.

iRepairtinker1, from what company do you purchase your replacement parts? I have a few vendors from which I purchase parts and, for the most part, their prices are are pretty much the same. I have gotten faulty parts from them all but those tend to be the exception to the rule.

I've just had a second screen of eBay supplier sent to me and it is worse than the first. It works only if you leave the screen loose and not stick it down. Bit of a pain. How much for a decent quality screen if you don't mind me asking.

I have been purchasing parts almost exclusively from a company called MobileDefenders. They seem to have good parts, prices, and I have been very pleased with their customer service. Their iPad Air digitizer is $40.

I have ordered parts on ebay from time to time when I couldn't find them anywhere else. In fact, that's how I came across MobileDefenders. I've been really lucky so far but have always been a little uneasy about buying parts from ebay.

I have made various purchases from several different companies and have gotten a faulty part here and there from all of them. What I've come to realize is that all replacement parts are made in China and produced in bulk. As such, there's going to be some bad parts, even bad batches of parts, every now and again.

Ultimately, I think the best thing you can do is find a company, or two or three, that you feel comfortable with, that stands behind their parts, and order from them. Higher price doesn't always translate to better quality but, a much lower price should throw up a red flag of concern.

Hope this helps.

I am In Australia, so mobile defenders would be very expensive for me to purchase from, fixmyapple is an Australia company, I have ordered a screen from them, they say it's an OEM, so if it is the screen that's causing the problems this will should fix it ended up getting it for $64 from there website.

Purchased a screen from fixmyapple and perfectly corrected all the problems, it came with retina, and screen sat very well, I think u r right Dave about it sitting better because of no bezel...

It's one of two things: it's the digitizer itself (purchased bad digitizer), or it's the actual input connectors on the motherboard, which can (and do) get damaged on DIY attempts. In that case, soldering the new connector on (the new digitizer connector, that is damaged, in this hypothetical) would be the only solution. That's a difficult task.

It's because the glass is coming in contact with the lcd. the original screen has foam around the edge, stopping any contact and static build up. What I did was to place double sided tape around were the foam was and left the paper backing on the tape, this stopped it for me. You can get the foam in Australia, mobilehq
