shift and function keys not working after keyboard replacement

sorry for the lack of capitalization, my shift keys aren't working. i just replaced my a1278 macbook keyboard due to water damage, the installation took a while but went smoothly. everything works correctly except for my shift keys and the function keys. the volume function keys are the only ones that work for some reason. i don't think the problem is due to the keyboard since it is brand new, help.

Problem is at the right end of the cable.

Check if the contacts are good or maybe the right side isnt in.

Also I am giving you this tip , because it's very hard to pull in the cable to the connector even when the lock is lifted.

Put a piece of tape on the ribbon cable and use it to pull the cable all the way in. That should do it and not harm anything.

Escobar - Don't give away our trade secrets ;-} I use the tape trick not only on the cable (disconnecting it and resetting it back in). I also use it on some of the latches as the tape will pull free before I break the latch. +1

Yeah its also useful for the latches :)

edit: you can also use strong tape to lift glass :)

I would double check the ribbon cable connection.

Review step 15 from this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Unibody Model A1278 Logic Board Replacement. Did you lift the retaining clip before pulling out the ribbon cable and make sure it was not engaged until you had fully inserted the cable squarely into the connector. If the cable was pushed in with the catch locked you could have damaged the contacts. Likewise if the ribbon was not fully seated squarely into the connector you could have a contact shorted.
