Installed Yosemite, Mac since crashed & won't start up

I installed a beta version of OS X Yosemite a month or so back, I'm not sure if this is related, but when I start to work on my MacBook Pro it started to crash a lot and now won't turn on at all.

Sometimes I can access internet recovery, which I have ran several times and all hardware checks out fine. I've got Mavericks ready to boot of a usb drive, but can't seem to launch it in recovery or safe mode.

Anyone have any ideas?

None of these solutions have worked unfortunately. I can still start up in Target Disk mode but when trying to launch to bootable media I just get a blue lined screen.

Does anyone have any more suggestions? I really don't want to have to fork out for a new machine.

I was having a similar issue. My MBP8,2 boots when it wants, I did a fresh install of the official Yosemite and now I'm screwed... Booting up in safe mode, seems to be something with the graphic card.

Beta versions are just that. They have bugs. Never install a Beta version as your main system. If you feel you must install it, put in a secondary hard drive in the optical bay. You may be able to boot in Target mode and wipe the drive. If you are not an experienced user, you should stay away from Beta versions. These versions used to be available only to professionals with the equipment and expertise to evaluate them.

Thanks Mayer, yes lesson learnt. It's not my main work station, but I should have run it of the second drive.

I am able to access the drives in Target Mode, but unable to erase the main drive as it comes up with the error "Unable to unmount disk". Are you able to advise on how best to go about it? There's nothing valuable on the main disk other than software I can re-install.

Please give us the last four figures of your serial number. This may be a HD/IR cable issue also.

The last four digits of the MacBook serial number are: DF91

I've since ordered the part new and tried replacing. I've managed to format the drive from my desktop when starting it up in target disk mode but when trying to launch to bootable media (usb with pre-loaded Mavericks) I just get a blue lined screen.

Any ideas?

Just had a crash similar to this with Yosemite. What fixed it was resetting SMC and PRAM, and then it booted normally.

Thanks for the suggestion, doesn't seem to have worked unfortunately but I have since ordered a new HD/IR sensor as suggested by mayer, so will see if that works.

I'm having this same issue. Unfortunately I don't think I'm resetting the SMC. Computer boots 10% of the time. Tried booting to Ubuntu on USB. Gives me a menu to install or try Ubuntu, after picking anything, screen goes blank. I tried putting Mavericks back on it and it froze during setup.

Same here. After updated to Yosemite it crashed. Even going into safe or recovery mode never helped me. So I fixed mine at Apple. Now my version of my macbook pro was now at Mavericks again.

So never ever go on an update on Beta until it has no more crazy bugs or whatsoever.
