iPod 5th gen 32 gb repair broken screen/battery repair

My iPod touch 5th generation recently befell a grim fate( smashed by my angry fiancé.)

And at first glance, I thought only the screen was broken. After ordering a new screen, I installed it flawlessly with the ifixit repair kit, until I tried to turn it on.it flashed the apple logo for a minute, and then displayed a warning that my iPod was overheating. I think it may be possible that the battery was damaged, because it has a small indention from where the screen was smashed.

Any ideas in how I may repair my precious iPod?

I guess what my real question is something along the lines of this: would a small indention in the battery of the ipod 5th gen cause it to display the overheating error? or does the ipod always display the overheating error whilest the screen is off?

I doubt that the dent on the battery is the culprit here. Typically a battery is fine unless the outer shell is actually punctured (you'd have a fire on your hands in that case). I've mangled more than a few batteries in my time and they always work perfectly fine afterword.

I suppose it is possible that the battery is overheating, but my guess is that there was damage to a sensor on the logic board, likely from the fall.

I've never heard of anything displaying a overheating problem unless it detects one. Either it's because there really is one, or because one of the sensors is faulty.
