Replaced CD-DVD drive and hard drive at same time

I installed a new hard drive and a new CD-DVD drive at the same time. I need to install OS10.5 and partition my new hard drive but the drive is not recognized. Only my CD-DVD drive shows in disk utility. I double checked my hard drive cable connections. Now what?

Check the new hard drive for jumpers (if any) and make sure it's set to master. What kind of drive did you get and from where?

I bought a 160 GB PowerBook Hard Drive Hitachi Upgrade from PowerBook Medic they said would work with my iBook G4. My iBook G4 wouldn't recognize the original hard drive anymore and I tried to revive it with Disk Warrior without success. There were no jumpers on the new HD; it was a straight plug in to the cable.

Were you booted in target mode to see the optical drive or from the internal PB drive?

Jim, your HD ribbon cable may be faulty. Was it replaced too ?

No, I didn't. The reason I didn't is because I used my G4 desktop to read the old harddrive via a fire wire, so I figured the ribbon cable must be ok. I am going to try the firewire thing again to see if my G4 will recognize the iBook G4's new HD. What do you think?

That should work.

I don't know what you mean by target mode. I had to use my install disk to boot up, then I was suppose to partition my new hard drive in disk utilities but it didn't list my new HD so I could partition it.

Could you try to clone your G4 desktop HD to the iBook internal drive via firewire and SuperDuper. The internal drive will be erased and a valid system installed then you'll check if the iBook boot from the internal.
