An external optical drive by Apple, essentially a rebranding of the MacBook Air SuperDrive.

What's the model number of this version of SuperDrive?

The latest Apple USB Superdrive, MD564ZM/A Model A1379, doesn't have the PATA connector for the internal slot-in optical drive. It's soldered to the USB wire directly. Therefore it's very difficult to replace the internal drive.

What's the model number of the superdrive shown in this repair guide, please?

Hey, so better late than never I guess. I'm pretty sure the original USB model is A1270.

That's a %#*@ shame about the USB connector being soldered straight to the drive here, I was hoping for a SATA connector.

The connector is hidden under the circuit board. Any drive that matches the size, is supported by OS X and has the PATA connector should work. Once you get yours out you should see a manufacturer's sticker on it.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Thanks for the message, machead3! The model you show here indeed has a circuit board that attaches to the optical drive itself. The latest model I just bought doesn't have such a circuit board. The wire coming from the USB goes straight to the circuit board of the optical drive at the same spot the connector usually is. So no connector at all. I am therefore looking for older model that has the circuit board exactly as what you posted.

this is incorrect, only model A1270 (manufactured prior to 2012) has a PATA connector hidden under the circuit board.
