Is there a Bluetooth 4.0 solution?

Hi,

I would like to upgrade my iMac 2011 EMC 2429 to bluetooth 4.0. The card installed in the iMac is the BCM92046MD. Is there a compatible BT 4.0 card I could buy and install?

Please help if you can...

All the best,

Tom

IMHO it's not worth the work/expense. Bluetooth 4.0 is mostly an energy saving delveopment for mobile devices (like phones and tablets). ''You don't need it... will give you little noticeable performance boost to upgrade. . . if you could locate a card and driver (extension/EFI update) that would work on an iMac.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Thank you for your reply. I understand that BT4 is mostly for mobile devices but it will also be part of Yosemite (Handoff, Continuity). I would like to take advantage of these options and if there is a way to upgrade my iMac's BT chip it would be great. I have already updated my MacBook Pro 2011 to BT4 by changing the chip. I am now seriously looking for a solution for my iMac... Could you please help, do you know the correct card ? All help will be greatly appreciated.

Tom, So far in the Yosemite beta's Apple has been using the systems ID to activate HandOff so even it you got BT4 working the OS service may not be active. This may change in the released version but I would wait to find out what Apple ends up doing before making any changes as you may just be wasting your time & money, besides risking damaging your system in the process of making something work.

Ok, thank you for this insight, let's wait for Yosemite final release and see what happens. As I said, I have a BT4 chip in my MBP 2011 so it will be a good test subject once we have the final OS. Thank you for your help !!!

Hi again, I just installed Yosemite on my MacBookPro 2011 with a Bluetooth board from a MacBook Air 2012 I modified the IO80211Family.kext and IOBluetoothFamily.kext files, everything works, Handoff, Continuity, Instant Hotspot !! If this works on my MBP can it work on my iMac 2011? Is there a Bluetooth board I coud install in my iMac that supports BT 4.0 LE ?

Help if you can,

Thank you,

Tom

Hi jjustinschultz,

For the MBP you need a BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX chipset - the one you have in your 2011 MBP is BCM94331PCIEBT4AX. You can open the computer to double check but this is probably it. I got mine on ebay from a 2012 MacBook Air.

Once you install the hardware you need to hack the .kext files, the tutorial is here:

That's it, everything works and this mod is +- $50 with shipping.

For the iMac, we need to figure out what chip with BT 4.0 LE is compatible, the rest is only about modifying the .kext files.

Hi Tom, I unfortunately don't have an answer for you, but am very interested what BT4 chip you put into your Macbook Pro 2011 and the kext mod. I am in the exact same boat as you with the same 2 machines looking to get Continuity to work.

thanks.
