Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Alltell CDMA version of the HTC Touch Pro (RAPH800).

How to tell if it's CDMA or GSM version from outside?

I understand that this phone comes in both GSM and CDMA versions, and supposedly (Verizon?) which have both CDMA and GSM built in.

If so, is there a way to tell which version of the phone it is without opening the case?

Thanks

Actually there are quite a few different versions of the Touch Pro (HTC Raphael). The Verizon version (Raphael 500) does not have global capability, CDMA only. In addition, the phone has a different exterior than others, a different keyboard layout, as well as 96mb less ram to run applications on the phone whereas all other versions, such as the Sprint (Raphael 800) and AT&T Fuze have 288mb of ram.

There's quite a lot of information on these phones at the XDA-Developer's wiki so here's the link: http://bit.ly/bPnhez.

If you have the Verizon (CDMA) version, there is a Verizon logo instead of an htc logo.

as a owner of a Verizon HTC Touch Pro 2 it is a global phone and you have the ability to switch between cdma or gsm. I have unlocked my phone simply by calling verizon customer service and speaking with the travel/overseas department. they gave me the unlock code so that i may insert any sim card into the device and switch to gsm. i have tried this locally with a t-mobile and att sim. it also worked overseas with a vodafone sim.

Can you update your answer to include unlock instructions? That'd be a good resource

The Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 are totally different phones. The Verizon Touch Pro is NOT Global capable. Only the Touch Pro 2 has that Global capability.
