Does this model have bluetooth LE or not?

So I've upgraded my 13" Macbook Pro mid-2012 to Yosemite and was surprised to learn that the system information says that handoff was not supported. This comes as a surprise considering that it is indeed listed as one of the models that supports this feature.

So I've been researching this and found different answers depending on where one looked. Does this particular model support bluetooth LE or doesn't it? If not, no problem, but if it does and I can simply replace my module to gain the feature, I'm willing to do it.

Thanks for any input.

You might want to try a newer AirPort card in case yours has a firmware issue which is stopping it from working. Otherwise I would wait till the dust settles down. Who knows! the point release of Yosemite may fix things.

That did the trick. I received the replacement card today and just finished installing it, and now I have the Handoff feature working.

Thanks to everyone for all of their help and feedback.

Thats great! I guess we learned the firmware of some of these AirPort boards won't allow Handoff to work. Which could explain Apple's problem here with Handoff (that is without upgrading the hardware $$)

Yes, it is interesting. But while I have it working, I have to say that it is far from consistent or stable. Sometimes it works, other times not. But based on my research, that's consistent with the results everyone else seems to be getting.

While I think the idea is a great one I do wonder if the hardware is upto it. First the signal needs to get between the two systems without error, so if you live in a dense area the air is quite saturated with signal noise, next the system needs to be actively listening for the wake up and be able to wake up as well. Some of the cellphone Chip makers started making big LITTLE CPU designs. These asymmetric designs allowed one CPU to be constantly alive (LITTLE) to monitor things while the big CPU's (dual/quad) would do the heavy processing. I do wonder if Apple needs to think in these terms across all of the systems. I also think this is like Siri, needs time to work things out. As an example sometime next year Siri will be likely getting a very big upgrade. The Apple-IBM deal is likely to bring Watson online as Siri's backend plus some other stuff within the client end in the iPhone and iPad.

This system fully supports the last version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" and OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" as well as the current version of OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" with the exception of the "Power Nap" feature.

Which Macs Support Yosemite.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. However, this doesn't really answer my question; Apple states that the MBP mid-2012 is compatible with the handoff feature and I was looking for confirmation that my particular notebook even has the requisite hardware to enable this, or if not, can it be rectified by upgrading the bluetooth card. I apologize for any confusion.

To identify Bluetooth 4.0 support: Go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac from the Apple menu, click on the More Info... button, then on System Report Select Bluetooth under Hardware in the left-hand pane, and then find the item LMP Version LMP stands for the "Link Management Protocol" used to set up and manage a Bluetooth connection between two devices.

If the value to the right of "LMP Version" is "0x6" then the Mac supports Bluetooth 4.0 and so can use Handoff when the system is upgraded to Yosemite.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to respond, but [once again] that doesn't answer my question.

I already know what you've suggested, but that simply identifies the existing hardware configuration for that card. What I am asking is this: since my MBP mid-2012 (i5, 2.5Ghz) is listed as compatible with the handoff function, and since I purchased this machine used (which means it's at least possible that the card was changed), would this machine even support bluetooth 4.0 LE if I were to replace the card?

I guess the way you asked the question and your responses mislead us. OK, So how to enable Handoff is the root question, not the hardware side of the issue. Review this: Continuity Activation Tool. It is a script tool to alter the OS blacklist & enable the drivers to support Handoff.

@Dan, thanks for patiently taking the time to respond. It must be the way I'm attempting to ask my question that is confusing people, so I'll try again:

I have one of the models that is supposedly supported, per Apple, but do not even have the option to enable handoff, as this is missing from the settings, and the information in the system report states that handoff isn't supported and that I do not have a bluetooth 4.0 LE card (I have bluetooth 4.0 but not 4.0 LE).

So the ultimate question is this: is this a question of completely incompatible hardware or an incompatible bluetooth card? Will replacing the card result in compatibility? I've tried asking this in the Apple discussion forums but either got snarky remarks or irrelevant answers. I thought I was being rather straight forward in my queries, but perhaps not. In any event, I hope these questions are clearer.

Thanks, Dan! I ran the Continuity Activation Tool again, and got the same results I got before, that my machine lacks the requisite bluetooth hardware to activate handoff. Then I ran EtreCheck and got different results, which says that my bluetooth card does support handoff, so I don't really know where I stand. It would have been helpful to have this feature, but if I can't get it working, I guess it's not the end of the world.

Thanks again for taking the time to try and help me out!

It's still early in the game here. Remember apps that leverage handoff are still being developed (only Apples apps right now). And with some pushing its possible Apple will re-align their support to cover the older systems too. I would encourage you to write an email to Tim Cook at Apple with your frustration on not being able to use handoff in your older system given the fact you have the needed hardware.

par

That's true. Besides, the continuity activation tool's system report states that the only thing keeping my system from being able to activate handoff is the bluetooth card I have installed. So I'm thinking about buying a newer one and putting that in. I just have to decide whether this is all worth spending $70+ for this feature.

Thanks again for all your insight!
