Can these burn CDs?

I have a 300 mHz iBook clamshell running OS 9.1 for my older apps. Is the drive capable of burning CDs? I have added Apple Disk Burn to the utilities, but when I pop in a blank CD, it is unreadable.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually bought a thumb drive (Sandisk) - it fits into the slot, but it won't mount on the desktop. The specs for it said that OSX was required, but I don't see what the difference would be. I have also read that I don't need to download a mass storage driver, as it came with the OS (9.1). I'll be trying an ethernet connection next. Any other suggestions regarding the thumb drive?

Another thing to note is that similarly to the USB ports of the iMac G3, the iBook clamshell will not be able to fit any USB Flash Drives because they are too wide and the case design of both of these prevents anything that is wider than the port from fitting. I have an iBook clamshell (as well as an iMac G3) myself, and the way that I've gotten around it is by using an extremely short USB Extension Cable, plugging one end into the Mac and the other into the flash drive.

Many USB flash drives do fit -- I've actually got one in a Clamshell right now. But you're right, it's a tight squeeze and probably impossible for a lot of them without an extension.

According to Mactracker, these computers all had CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives -- no disk burning capabilities, unfortunately.

If you're trying to move large amounts of data off of the machine, an ethernet network may be your best bet, since it appears you have the non-Firewire model and the USB on these machines is only 1.1.

If you're just looking to get the data off the computer, a USB thumb drive might be a good option. It will be slow to copy, because, as Mister790 pointed out, it's only USB 1.1, but you can always just start it going and come back an hour later.

A lot of USB drives are bigger than the hard drives on Clamshells, which is pretty bizarre to think.

Your best bet is buying an external burner/optical drive, not only will it have the capabilities and not be old, but it'll be way faster than the built in one. Plus, you'll probably get DVD capabilities with that.

Does it light up at all when you first plug it into your Clamshell (to see if it's receiving power)? I actually use a Sandisk Cruzer Micro 8 GB (SDCZ6-8192-C11). On my Clamshell, it seemed to go in, but I eventually realized that it wasn't going in all the way since the Cruzer Micro wasn't showing any signs of even doing anything at all.

Have you tried reformatting the flash drive in another Mac, with a partition scheme of APM? I don't like the Cruzer, myself, because there's an extra Windows-only partition on there you can't get rid of. Maybe that's what OS9 is choking on. I prefer the Kingston or Attache flash drives for that reason.

I assume that you're referring to the U3 partition? I suppose it could be a problem under OS 9. While mine has worked perfectly under OS X, it apparently hasn't been so perfect for others. Check out this Macworld article for more info.

I've owned at least five 300 MHz clamshells and none of them had cd burning capability. All they had were CD ROM drives. The sole 366 MHz clamshell I've owned came with a DVDROM drive. No burning capability too.
