Why won't my iBook recognize a 40 GB drive?

A friend gave me a iBook (G3 dual usb)that was working fine, but had a 10 GB drive. I had a couple of 40 GB drives from some PowerMac mini's, so installed in the iBook.

When I boot up with OSX 10.4.0 install CD (with the option key) the CD is recognized, but not the drive. I put the 10 GB drive back in and it's recognized by the CD boot sequence, along with the CD. Is there a limitation on drive size?

Yes, there is a limitation of drive size. That shouldn't be your problem though, since the limit is 128GB. I would check that the drive you are trying to install has no bent pins, and that it still works. Also, have you tried going into Disk Utility on the CD and formatting it? even if it has the wrong format, it should still show up is disk utility. If you still can't find it, then there is a problem with your drive.

This is a second 40GB drive that I tried. I also tried this on another iBook and got the same results. Disk utility on CD does not recognize the 40GB hard drive. Do I need to have OS9 hard disk drivers pre-installed on the drive? Think I'll try installing OS9 (yikes).

Thanks for you reply.

So 2 different 40GB drives won't work on 2 different iBooks? Thats a very strange problem. I would try to put one of them in a USB enclosure, boot of your 10GB disk, then format them in disk utility in Mac OS X, that may give you a working result. When you format the drive, use the "Mac OS Extended (Journeled)" option, and under the options menu, make sure you have it set to use the APM (Apple Partition Map) formating scheme, and not GUID, or FAT.
