If you bump the ground my picture shrinks to a thin line.

I have an old tube tv. When you stomp the ground or bump the tv in any way, it squints to a thin line in the middle of the screen. Unwatchable. Then you stomp again a couple times and it comes back. What's the deal?

Horizontal - or vertical | line? What make and model is your TV? How are your skills? You have access to a good set of tools etc?

jessiljohnson, first off be careful. CRT display pack a punch and unless you know what you are doing, I strongly suggest that you do not poke or probe inside your TV. Take a look at the answers of this question.

You did not tell us if it collapse horizontally or vertically. As a very general answer the fault could be with the vertical deflection circuitry. This could be caused by things like dry solder joints, bad electrolytic capacitors, vertical output I.C., vertical Oscillator and many more issues. A vertical collapse can be caused by the same things, but also by the Flyback Transformer.

I do apologize for the delay. The collapse is horizontal.

Check for bad/leaking capacitors. inspect the solder joints as well. Make sure the caps are fully discharged before you touch anything.
