No power flowing to battery connector - Dock connector is ok.

I recently bought an iPhone 5 on Ebay and it won't turn on (although it was described as being in working order). I can't return it (German laws) but I've fixed a number of things on iPhone 4's before, so I figure I'd give it a shot.

Unfortunately I haven't got very far and need some help :-)

So I've used a multimeter and there's 0V on the actual battery connector when plugged in. When I check an iPhone 4S battery connector (plugged in) each of the 4 pins has a different voltage but at least there's some life.

So I checked the lightning cable, which shows something like 5.14V on the 4th (I think) pin to ensure that's not the problem. The dock connector cable also shows something like 5.14V on the plug where it plugs into the logic board.

One of the little brass coloured dots on the logic board also shows 5.14V but the battery connector doesn't do anything. The battery (is a replacement, apparently 1 month old) also shows 0V.

So in short, how can I check why no power is going to the battery connector or am I barking up the wrong tree and the connector only shows voltage when a battery is connected and the real problem is the battery? Any other tests you can recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Have you checked the components around the connector? Have you measured on different areas of the connector?

Yes and no. I have identified 2 other areas that also have 5.14V but I am not sure which other components I need to be checking to be able to narrow it down. I checked every single metal part of the connector multiple times, hoping that it'll come alive, but no luck.

Just wondering how I can narrow it down to what actually needs to be replaced. Chances are it's micro-soldering which I can't do myself anyway.

Oh and one more thing. From reading other questions here, I gather that when the battery is removed but the phone is plugged in, it should turn on or at least show the Apple logo?

This is also not the case.

Could be an issue with the USB/charging IC

Thanks for the helpful tips. In the end I found that the IC U2 has to be replaced, there's a shop online that offers it for €90,- within Germany, as I can't do this myself. I don't have equipment and never tried before.

You may have problems with the USB IC protector or the charging IC. Take a look at those components and check for missing or burned components. To repair them you would have to reflow the BGA IC or even replace it with a reball. This is intricate repair and will require the right tools and the right skills. I also would consider repalcing the power flex, just to make sure that it is not the reason for this issue.
