Laptop turns on, fans run, but screen won't come up

My Toshiba Satellite L305-DS5934 has taken a fit ! I can power it up and the screen just lightly flashes when you initially push the power button. The hard drive indication light is not flashing as it normally would either. I was thinking maybe video card? Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated! Thank you, John

Options

Hook it up to an external monitor to test the video GPU. If it works on an external then the problem is with the LCD or display data cable or inverter. Start up from your system insatllation disk to test the hard drive.
